Re: Frankie and Erin

Sounds like it could be a big band arrangement of I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel To Be Free (Billy Taylor).

If so, there's huge variety of recorded versions, and there's bound to be some good danceable ones, but I don't know any specific ones there.

Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven

Tried Not Far to Fargo and Glen's Idea last night.

Fargo... didn't work so well, but I misjudged that a little anyway - it wasn't quite the moment for it.

Glen's Idea went down a treat.

Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven

I don't have any problems with the sound quality, but I suppose I'm not really the world's greatest audiophile. Certainly I have albums with better sound, especially some of the modern albums from the likes of Campus 5, but I'm in no way disappointed by Uptown Jump. Maybe my opinion will change as I...

Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven

Myself, I love it, and I'm looking forward to DJing from it. I think that Glenn's output just keeps getting better and better - the fact that he chose to record a whole album of original swing music is incredibly ambitious enough - as soon as I saw that, I had to back it - and he's pulled it off in ...

Re: CDs vs downloads

Of course: You need to create a backup from time to time but honestly: It's not a really big deal ;) It's no big deal until that unscheduled catastrophic hard drive failure comes along (for example) That's the point when you become grateful for up-to-date backups... Although I do seem to be strayin...

Re: CDs vs downloads

If you rely on computers for anything, you need backups. So it doesn't really affect my choice of formats (I have a lot of backups, in a lot of different places)

Re: 2013 ILHC Slow Dance Finals - Mikey Pedroza & Jo Hoffber

The good news - found it - it's listed on the ILHC website as being by The Lucky Dogs Jazz band. The bad news - I can't find any of their music on sale anywhere - their website doesn't exist, and their Facebook page hasn't been updated in three years - so I assume they've disbanded? Anyone know how ...

Re: 2013 ILHC Slow Dance Finals - Mikey Pedroza & Jo Hoffber

I don't think this is Solomon's arrangement -his drummer has a lot of emphasis on snare which is missing here. This is very noticeable on the break /"slow" part. From listening I *think* this version is slowed down as well, but I'm not sure (listen to the horns in the beginning). Agreed. ...

Re: Where are the swing DJ discussions these days?

Tricky. I've noticed that a few dance-related forums that I've frequented over the years seem a lot less active. I agree with Jesse that FaceBook has taken its toll, even though its discussion facilities are ... pretty dire, imo. For my own part - I've never been a major contributor, I do lurk still...

Re: Freddie Green

The Basie rhythm section was widely regarded as this perfect, cohesive swinging unit. Jo Jones (and Green, Page and Basie) had honed their roles as parts of a machine that was greater than the sum of its parts. I'm sure Krupa would have been apprehensive about breaking up that team by placing himse...

Re: Freddie Green

Haven't heard of that one. I'd say its unlikely. I've read that rhythm guitars were set up in a way that made it unsuitable for them to solo anyway. The story came from Jazz Anecdotes, and was told by Harry Edison. Unfortunately, it doesn't give any dates, but does say that Freddie had an amplified...

Re: Freddie Green

Thanks got it. That's really handy. Presumably that's Mr Krupa banging away behind him - any more solos where it's just Basie's rhythm section behind him? I read an intriguing story that the rhythm section used to fall apart when he took solos, so members of the band took it upon themselves to sabot...

Freddie Green

I've been reading a lot lately, and gathering some questions on ... loads of aspects of music. One is about Freddie Green - and the fact that he played virtually no solos, for all his amazing talent, and there's an intriguing tale in Jazz Anecdotes about why that might have been. The question is - w...

Re: The Swinger hacks any song to... swing

BTW - I've done a few experiments with this thing, mostly for a workshop to help prove the point that a swung rhythm doth NOT automatically make a piece of swing music.

Some work better than others, but my absolute favourite was MC Hammer (U Can't Touch This, of course)
Awful, but hilarious.
