I use to use a system like this one for about a year. http://cachemi.zzounds.com/media/fit,400by400/quality,85/brand,zzounds/Escort-On-Stand-a679cf4e946bbc1f45784b1a0b410f76.jpg They are very handy systems, and easy to use. As a general rule, at a standard event you need about 4 watts RMS for every ...

It's not just British copyright law, it's how copyright in general applies to old Jazz recordings. I'm sure I've seen this discussed here before. Haydn, Copyright is country specific. There are no general world laws (well not yet anyway). Many countries laws are very similar, but not the same. Ther...

Hi Haydn, On Sunday afternoon I did have a good listen to both tracks. In your question to which would I play at a dance? - Neither. I have a very good quality Ken Burns re-mastered version that has the clarity without loosing too much. I think your discussion is starting to get into Low Fidelity Vs...

I'm not trying to put a downer on Matthew little bit of work, but some jazz fans would not be soe happy with of some of that editing. It's all to do with how good you are at listening to the sound itself. Have you listened to the tracks Matthew posted Brian? Please try to understand that I am not g...

Oh alright then, let's get back to copyright  Does anyone know how current copyright law applies to cheap reissues of 1930s Jazz? It's difficult enough keep up with Australian laws not alone UK laws. Here is the British Copyright Council website. To really understand the laws you will just ne...

I think the "Digital Editing" of vintage recordings is a topic of huge debate. I'm not trying to put a downer on Matthew little bit of work, but some jazz fans would not be soe happy with of some of that editing. It's all to do with how good you are at listening to the sound itself. Any ed...

The UK copy right laws are a lot less severe then the US and Australian Copy right laws. This is why currently there are so many box sets coming out of the UK that cost so little.
My guess is they want to extend them to be similar to the US.

Assuming your PA is “Tuned” to your room, the only reason you should need to adjust the track EQ is if the Mastering is not good. But how often do we (Swing DJ’s) actually have tuned PA’s and good mastered tracks to use. It is worth reading up on EQ’s before you decide to go mad. Have an understandi...

Getting back to making songs sound “Brighter” I was reading back over my Live Sound Reinforcement book, and “Brighter” is a specific term in regard to EQ. It refers to any of the frequencies above 2kHz. If the mix is lacking some of these frequencies it is said to be lacking Brightness. Many recordi...

I'm listening to a lot of Australian jazz lately. But I'm also having my iPod on shuffle a lot also, so that can be any form swingin' to traditional Jazz. What I spin at dances has very little to do with what I listen to. Most dancers want the same old, same old. (That way they don't have to listen....

The weakness of vintage recordings was the actual recording equipment itself. The mics of the time where fantastic, with great dynamic ranges and frequency response curve (Pick up from 50Hz to 15KHz and an almost flat response from 100Hz to 10KHz). However much of the recording devices only had a ra...

What I mean by "EQing the room" is adjusting the equalizer to allow for the acoustic properties of the room not the track. You really only get the chance to do this if you are setting up the Audio system and have a good Equalizer, like a Parametric or 1/3 octave Equalizer. You would use a ...

You Can't. What you can do is: Do the research to find which are the best re-mastered recordings available. Use the best audio gear you can get your hands on, and if on laptop non-compressed files. Make sure you EQ the room. Tell everyone to "Shut up" and be quite. (I've DJed rooms where t...
