actually i find the animus towards the original question very interesting. and probably does more to answer 12bars question as anything anyone could have posted. the question reminds me of an interview i heard on the radio about Robert Johnson with someone who had just released some work about him....

I now come at it from the point of view that it is wrong to trade music. And have tried to discourage it. (btb, i dont mean to pick on your post in particular, sorry) i dont think anyone would not want the artist to get their royalties. they work hard, and dont really get paid that much. that said....

after the quote i started this thread with he writes, "some of us people of pallor just fall in love with the music, and i have no inkling of what is going on in the souls of those white folks that show up at summer blues festivals shirtless, spill beer on themselves, trade high 5s with their g...

i didnt think that the author was really asking, "why arnt more blacks intrested in this music", as much as much as he was asking, "how does largly white audience effect the music", although, reading the paragraph on its own with out the context of the rest of the chapter can mak...

How so? How does the fact that the scene includes a very small proporition of blacks impact how we DJ? If Phil, Rayned, Damon and myself are at an event, does that legitamize it? Does it make it better? Does it mean that the event is keepin' it real? Does our presence alter the music played? Does i...

how does a largely white audience effect the music?

i post this here even though the start of the paragraph is about the blues, because it applies to swing. we are a scene largely of "whites who embrace black music". "the (relative) lack of black faces in the crowd has become a greater cause for concern, because with out them the blues...

I just think it's a flashy way for the DJ to show he and talk and mix music at the same time. i dont think that is the reason at all; ill ask butch why he does it. what i noticed was done in a way that didnt intrupt either the flow of the set, or the dancing. most people are talking and finding a p...

announcing songs

i was at a carolina shag event this past week, and several of the djs there announce song title, or artist, or both for like 40% of the songs they play. its usually as the last song fades out, or as the 2nd song starts up; never really cutting the music to talk. they include things like reminders to...

taking lindy hop and trying to force it in a box, imo, goes against the "spirit of the dance". lindy hop is created by putting many things together. any single component does not identify the dance; its a combination. take one piece away, its still lindy hop. take many pieces away, well th...

I think categorization would be a good idea, and funny too. I might do ok if there was a "vocals only" category ;-) I really suck at recognizing songs, especially instrumentals, unless I know them really really well. I'm starting to get better though by practicing when other folks DJ - I ...
