Well I have a wee bit on a confession to make. I copied the CDs from the radio stations archives. The CDs aren't cheap and prior to spending the money, I wanted to verify the quality. Now that I've heard the quality, I will end up buying a few of the CDs. For my needs and general feeling of supporti...

I just listened to Vol 1 last evening. Amazing fiedlty considering some of the material dates back to 1923. Very good CD and I'm anxious to listen to the rest of the set. This should be the basis of my radio show.

Thanks for spotting this new Proper Set. There are a few more of the small group things in it.

"Chick Webb and his Little Chicks" is the group name.

WOW - for those of us old enough to remember DAK, the history found on this web site is interesting. Unrelated to your post, I bought several pieces of gear from DAK back in my college days. In fact I still use the graphic equalizer I bought from him back around 1983 or so. so he has resurfaced........

I'm going to stoke the collective fire on this subject again. I've been asked many times by listeners to feature a 2 hour show to them, but have not as yet collected enough material to do this. I have the cd "That's How Rhythm Was Born" and really enjoy it. But before I shell out the money...

I think the version the band is playing is from the Basie book of the late 60s or early 70s. If my failing memory serves me right, it is a Sammy Nestico arrangement. Not having my stash of CDs in front of me, I'm guessing it is one one of the Pablo releases of the Basie Big Band from the early 1970s...

Thank You I've got a lot of great ideas from your list. BTW - many of the names who really didn't lead many bands can be found on the massive and wonderful Mosaic set: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=170-MD-CD I've guessing 1/3 to 1/2 of my music on the upcoming show will be from t...

For those in the Cleveland area, Kevin will be performing with the Cleveland Jazz Orch this Friday - Jan 27th. The venue is the gorgeous Bop Stop. Seating is VERY limited - about 200. But the venue is gorgeous, and the accoustics are world class. http://www.clevelandjazz.org/ http://www.clevelandbop...

Some of the big band things I like, some of them I'm not as fond of. But I have heard maybe 4 or 5 cuts of his small group performances. These were with a subset of his large band. Very much in the John Kirby style and these are my favorite Chick Webb recordings. The few tracks I've heard are on the...

Jonathan, Thanks. George Van Eps was an amazing player. I got a CD of recordings he did in the 1940s. Some amazing playing. In listening it sounds like 2 players, yet there is only one. I took the liberty of adding my original list from above. Thanks for the updated list. How does this look? Bunny B...

Jimmy Rushing Ethel Ennis Thanks. I had never heard of Ethel. Nice little bio on her here: http://www.mrlucky.com/songbirds/html/jun99/c_eennis.html For Jimmy Rushing, I'm aware of the famous Brussels tour that he did. But I'm not sure Jimmy was a 'regular' member of the band at any time. Was Jimmy...

Benny Goodman Alumni

HI, I'm in the process of preparing a BG Alumni show that will air this Friday (Jan 27). Here is a list off the top of my head on people who were members of the BG band. I'm not going to include people who recorded with Benny, but didn;t tour - example is Ella. Any other significant people you can t...

Hi,

Been a long time since I've posted on the site.

I've been thinking of featuring a food related show and came across one that surprising I don't think has been listed in this thread

Louis Jordon - Boogie Woogie Blue Plate
