I've listened to the first CD in the Ellington set. The sound quality is excellent. The performances are excellent. The drums aren't heard much at all. But there are some dance things on the first disc. Maybe 1/3 of the CD (5 or 6 tracks) would be good for dancing. Some fine blowing from Taft Jordon...

Glad there is a thread on the JSP label. I've been eyeing getting some material.

Anyone own the Mills Bros JSP sets?

I'm mostly interested in earlier (1930s) stuff. Thoughts pro or con on the JSP releases.

Thought I would restoke the fire on the Hindsight label. I have listened to maybe 10 or so of the LP releases. All have been excellent. I then just found out about some of the box sets on CD from Hindsight. Namely the Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and Harry James sets. I bought and just got the Duke El...

Thanks Huey,

I've sampled the Oscar Peterson set I bought. I still need to listen to the whole set. The sound quality is very good.

The others you mention sound very interesting. I'll have to add some of them to the collection.

Re: Sound quality questions...

How's the sound quality on that Lucky Millinder Proper Pair compared to the Classics releases??? I don't own the Classics, but I do own the Proper Pair. Sound quality is excellent. Has several selections with Sister Rosetta Tharpe singing. I've used the Proper set as an ENTIRE show on the radio and...

.....I think Dennis Rowland played trombone for Basie for a bit too; i'm not sure if he ever also sang...... Thanks Rayned. I had forgotten Dennis. I know Dennis sang with Basie in the late 1960s or so. I seem to recall Dennis telling me he sang the Nat Adderly famous "Work Song" with Bas...

I'm looking at the original Columbia LP label. On side 1, there are 5 song titles listed, but looking at the bands on the disc itself, there are 7 seperate bands. (The first track is not in the Toot Suite.) Why? The liner notes tell the story - "Red Carpet" is divided into three sections....

Help in Identifying Ellington's Toot Suite Movements

Hi all, I need a wee bit of help for you Ellington fans. This past weekend I transferred from a reel to reel tape to my computer, a wonderful Duke Ellington concert from 1958 called Jazz Party. The reel is from a cassette dub done by a friend. Here is my problem. On the recording is a wonderful suit...

I find myself dissapointed at times. That is one reason I pick and choose the CDs based on the label very important. At the top of my list is Mosaic of course. Always excellent quality. The highest priced sets. But the quality is always top notch. I find Proper to be of this same quality. Excellent ...

Didn't know if others have bought sets from the label. Has nice packag...

I think Nathan has hit the subject smack dab in the middle. It is all about sales and profits. The record companies are going to promote and distribute the items which sell the most. I have always taken the philosophy on my recording collection that if I spy something that I want or like, I better b...

I use exclusively the original CD holders. Then the large collection is stored in very nice (but not cheap) metail drawers at home: http://www.can-am.ca/ Then I take to the radio station every week a 50 CD case logic container and a tote bag for large box sets (Mosaic and Proper). Because my shows a...
