Why get 60's Willie when you can get 30's Willie??? Because not only do you get to hear him play, but you get to hear him talk about his life, his music and all the Jazz men he knew and worked with.....including his first encounter with Fats Waller. And most of the time. he's playing while he is sp...

I've recently gotten really keen on spoken intros and outros - "live from the Savoy!" is exciting. This could be because I've not been able to dance for a while and have been DJing like a tire kicker instead. :( I have a bunch of songs labeled as "intro" and "goodbye" ...

Yes, that is great. And you can see the performance on youtube; really interesting the interactions between the musicians.

i don't have the tom lords discography, but i have bruyninckx, and it lists about 130. if you want, i can copy those pages and send them to you, trev. i just didn't want to clutter the thread with four pages of stuff. Actually, if you could send me a list that would be really helpful! PM me or trev...

Re: Ella and her scatting

Leo Watson for one. Bon Bon with Jan Savitt was pretty good. Buddy Stewart and Dave Lambert in Krupa's band, Sarah Vaughan. I think Anita O'Day scatted now and then and it was pretty decent. "That's What You Think" is a nice example. Some Louis A. stuff. There a very funny broadcast with ...

I thought that was from the Betty Roche's version of "Route 66?" Which version of "Flying Home" does Ella use that phrase?

The music for the film was arranged and conducted by Dick Hyman. All of the guitar solos are played by guitarist Howard Alden. Alden also coached Sean Penn on playing the guitar for his role in the film.
I guess next time just play him some howard alden.

I can't count that fast. I know there are a bunch of songs in the 300s, but I'm not sure if there are any swing songs over 400. Is there a video of the performance?

He was a good man. I had the privilege of meeting him a couple of times. At one of the Great Southwest Lindy Fests, he told great stories of playing gigs with Buster Smith before his tenure with Ray Charles. I feel lucky to have gotten to see him last year in DC at Twins Jazz. It was a great time; t...
