This is the problem album.
Most releases of this material since have used this album as a source, complete with echo and fake stereo. My dream is a release of this album properly remastered from the metal plates or at least original 78s.

Re: Overdue for a good remastering
Dorsey and Crosby were also (mostly) Decca. It seems Universal Music Group haven't been interested in releasing/restoring them (no profit). I did some poking around and it seems that there is hope: Universal Music Group's vintage recordings head to Library of Congress . Not sure what this means for ...

I was wrong.. Indeed a slower live version recorded 2 months before the studio recording. Fascinating!

Re: Caravan discography info
I'm not 100% on this, but I think it's the May 14, 1937 Ellington orchestra version played back at the wrong speed. It has the same Cootie Williams trumpet growl and the same Juan Tizol sequence. If my hunch is correct, then the personnel are: Rex Stewart (cnt) Cootie Williams, Arthur Whetsol (tp) J...

My mistake, I meant RCA/Victor. This CD is decent: http://amzn.com/B000008AS6.Eyeball wrote:Tommy Dorsey Deccas - do you mean the post 40s Deccas?

Yeah sorry, I used the .co.uk because shipping is significantly faster to Australia, but they are essentially the same items in the same store.

Re: King Louis by Proper Box 93: Louis Armstrong
That sounds expensive. Proper Box usually does things cheaply and with not good sound. For early Louis Armstrong in the best sound, I recommend: Retrieval's King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band 1923-1924 The Complete Set : http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000005R5L Timeless Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstro...

Re: Overdue for a good remastering
Ah yes, I was going to add 40s Tommy Dorsey , but I couldn't remember which ones were in need - I know the Deccas are decent.
EDIT: oops, not Decca, RCA Victor

I agree completely, but then it's Louis Armstrong recorded live, in great sound.

Overdue for a good remastering
The last few years of collecting has made me appreciate more and more the work of preservationists and audio engineers in restoring and remastering the music of the Swing Era and making it available. We are fortunate to live in an age where a large percentage of recorded material from the time is av...

I only have one listing for Herman too. It's possible that the YouTube version is being played back too slow.

Re: History of Swing Music: Book recommendations
So I've been re-reading The Swing Era by Gunther Schuller. I last read it about 8 years ago, but since then I've collected much more (if not most) of the example tracks he critiques. It's been fascinating to read and listen along at the same time. I've made a few new [to me] discoveries - I'd overlo...
