I would also like to echo Paris Combo...I find that alot of their stuff can be played for dancing (and not just swing dancing). It's a far cry from big band, but it's nice jazz. I have their self titled CD, which is pretty good- you can use stuff off it for some latin dances too. The singer's voice ...

What sometimes works better instead is a song that goes into half time partway through, then kicks back into normal time. I guess I'm thinking of "Ain't Misbehaving" by Maxine Sullivan at the moment. I quite like that song. I've got a badass Fats Waller recording of Ain't Misbehaving that...

When people go out to dance - they want to hear some familiar songs. The key is when and how to rotate them in. You gotta mix it up. Probably the worst thing you can play isn't an 'overplayed' song, but a set that's filled with a bunch of 'overplayed' songs in a row. Exactly, this is problem I have...

Have you ever had the nightmare of going out dancing only to find that 80% of the music you're going to hear is played every week at this venue, and at least once a week at another? Songs like, "Artificial Flowers", "Zoot Suit Riot" (yes, it still gets played and packs the floor)...

We have one local DJ, who's also the band leader of one of our local big bands, that only spins vinyl. He's got quite a collection of big band 78s, mostly late 30's and early to mid-40's. He says that he's found them in thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, estate sales and even in the garbage...

I bought a Big Band compilation set once, it was only $9.99, so I figure what the heck. Even if it was bad, it was only $9.99- so it wasn't a total loss. There were no liner notes, and there were one or two tracks that were switched in order on the case- but still, the music is good and the quality'...

I've heard local djs play some soundtrack songs...they go over pretty well with most of the dancers, but I'm not a big fan of most of them. Chicago - When You're Good to Mama That Thing You Do - That Thing You Do Moulin Rouge - Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend Rushmore - Here Comes My Baby (by Cat ...

Played Basie's "Doggin' Around" on thursday and got a nice jam going- and it happened spontaneously. A few couples were dancing, but everyone stopped to cheer on one couple that was totally bustin' out!
