Let's try this another way. One of the benefits of DJing with a laptop is that it 1) speeds up the process of finding the next song or two and 2) allows you to cue several songs in advance instead of just one song on the other dual deck. You can also select several alternative songs ("ideas") at the...

There is one huge disadvantage of laptop DJ'ing though. It encourages irresponsible DJ'ing. It's way too easy to set up a playlist and go off and have a few dances. The number of times I have seen unattended laptops just sitting there chugging away while the DJ cuts a rug.... Although there are cas...

I volunteer at my campus radio station, so I have access to the studio and all the proper recording and computer gear. My faculty of music also has a nice collection on LP. Now if only there were 40 hours in the day so I could actually find the time to use it all :? Yes, time is definitely the bigg...

That's not glue, its lube.

Wait a sec... gotta wipe off my monitor.

Nope, I was mistaken. Just strings. 8)

I looked into them, but rejected getting one. They are convenient and nifty and seemed like EXACTLY what I wanted/needed, but if I am going to go to all that work of digitizing my LP collection, I want the results to be as close to perfect as possible. Both audiophile and computer-geek tests have re...

You can get rid of it by eliminating the ground (not ideal), running on battery, getting an extension cord and using a different outlet, or using an isolation transformer I've tried running to different outlets, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Running on battery does work, but that's not ...

The Disc Doctor will NOT get glue that resilient off. Not even if it worked perfectly and the rubber spokes did not collapse. It is designed to get very superficial scratches off, and the rubber-spoked wheel is designed to NOT put that much pressure on the CD. Also, soaking a CD in oil is NOT a good...

Repost since the boards reset: a link I cam across while looking up causes for laptop audio hum http://ask.metafilter.com/20028/Laptop-Audio-Hum I always get a hum when I connect my laptop to speakers. The intensity varies from place to place, though it doesn't seem to matter if the speakers are on...

Thanks for the update Brent. I guess that's what happens when Apple lets Intel design the innards of their gear. I just picked up a Turtle Beach Advantage Micro while I as in Vancouver for Lindy Bout. I'm impressed that it Just Worked(tm). The only thing I found was that it tended to be a little we...

We also discussed different machines cleaning discs, including using a buffing wheel attached to a machine grinder and the "Disk Doctor" scratch removal machine that is available at Fry's. I advised against the disc doctor. The buffing wheel is arranged with rubber spokes that frequently collapse du...

The other stuff that got deleted pertained to the discussion of using polishing compound and then car wax with your own rag on the UNDERSIDE of the CD. The top side (with the writing) is just a thin membrane that contains the digital information. The underside of a CD is just regular plastic, which ...

Typically, most songs that change tempo ultimately double the tempo, which provides such an abrupt shift for dancers that I completely avoid playing any song that suddenly changes tempo. For listening, it might be fine, but when dancing and turning that music into physical form, it is just too abrupt.

I agree with what Stan wrote. A tiny, flash drive could suffice to back up your personal stuff if it is only documents and a few pictures. For your dissertation, a flash ("thumb") drive (or two for double-backup) should more than suffice. Fry's has an ad for a 4 GB thumb drive for $23 this week, so ...
