Actually, I was kinda privately eating my words this saturday - our quartet that did such a nice job of un-modernizing last time was totally confusing the new dancers - and the big band wasn't bad, but the hardest swinging stuff they played was glenn miller tunes.

Blues in Orbit. Why? For listening or DJing? I can only find one song off that CD that grabs me, but maybe if I got some track recommendations, I could listen to them more attentively and find I like them better. Villesville, Three J's, Smada & Pie Eye's are the ones I've probably used off of it th...

Has anyone looked into hiring students from the music school at UH? Here's a clip of their jazz orchestra: http://www.uh.edu/music/audio/jazz_syeeda.html The director's name is Noe Marmolejo , and it looks like his email address is noemarm@mac.com (ph: 713 743-3191) (he could probably hook you up wi...

I've picked up a couple of Red Allen LPs lately, but haven't listened to em more than once or twice.. Red Allen, Jack Teagarden & Kid Ory at Newport Struttin with some Barbecue & St James Infirmary have just crazy energy, but the rest of the album was kinda forgettable.. and even those two tracks se...

It's too bad the Bonebrake Syncopators don't have a CD out. As far as I know, anyway. You could buy Dave Stuckey's CD.. it's mostly the same band doing western stuff, instead of benny goodman stuff with a western tinge. :) Re: Songs we like done by western bands - the absolute best Four or Five Tim...

If it's a question of dealing with it while you're djing (vs on a mixed cd), I've got a trick - if I want the level of the next song to be right, I put both the current song and the next one into the headphones and fuss with the gain on the next one till the volume is about the same - then just stic...

The Titan Hot 7 will be playing in Seaside OR at the Oregon Dixieland Jubilee. www.jazzseaside.com. If anyone has heard any of the other bands playing at this event I'd be interested to hear your feedback. The TH7 alone is enough for me to make the drive as I have been wanting to check them out for...

Bob Wills is cool. I have Vol. 2 of Tiffany Transcripts..

My favorite modern western swing is Dave Stuckey and the Rhythm Gang.. I LOVE the piano.. the guy's name is T Jarod Bonta, and he's apparently from austin, and has also recorded with Wayne Hancock..

The clubs probably do pay, since representatives of the organizations basically show up and demand the money.

It probably depends on the situation - the quality of DJing went way up when they started paying DJs to do band breaks at the Viscount..

Even if you want to change viewpoints, it's more successful as a seduction. I like this....DJ as Seducer...come here little dancer, I will make you happy with my music ;-) Puppet Master: You two, you'll stop dancing now and go get some water.. you over there, you're going to get really excited and ...
