Just wanted to update you all on what's going on with the big Basie weekend! I'm still sticking to my guns that this could be the greatest night - and greatest weekend - of dancing to live music for dancers of our generation. And for anyone who likes Basie, his spirit will be everywhere all weekend ...

Thanks for the clarification, Lawrence. Wow! What a life, no wonder so many people keep talking about how amazing he is (or use his name as the epitome of a style that one hates)

So besides Down Home Blues, what are all y'all's favorite Gene Harris cds?

Hey Dave! I think I can answer this one :) I've found a lot of treasures at great prices at Academy Records, on 18th bet 5th and 6th. Also, what I love about it is if you bring your own discman, you can listen to the used cds (and listen while you're still looking; it's not like you have to walk to ...

Hey kitkat. If you're interested, the product # for The Complete Decca Recordings is D2170348 (I found it by searching "Basie" at www.bmgmusicservice.com and clicking on more selections when his name comes up, it appears there.)

I can't isolate the DJs expenses that way. (Interesting you can't, 'cuz that's exactly what I do when I create excel spreadsheets of an event I'm organizing. I have my projected expenses, projected price, and projected attendance at said price. I can very easily isolate any budget line, change that...

My point in bringing up all other expenses was to show that there are a lot of expenses out there. To look at every expense and say "That is money out of a DJ's pocket" is too simplistic. I completely agree. Similarly, a promoter shouldn't budget for all these other expenses and not budget anything...

As an event organizer, it can be hard to justify to your fellow Exchange Coordinators paying too much DJ airfare. When you add in bands, local DJs, there are only so many available hours for an out of town marque DJ. It seems like you're saying "Either we pay $250 extra to fly in a DJ or we use loc...

and the amount someone "should" accept is simply the lowest that the person is willing to do it for...The above sentiments should be rephrased to say, "the Exchange should offer a bare minumum that is necessary to get who they want to come to actually accept the offer." Wow, Lawrence, I couldn't di...

My understanding is you need to get rights from both the owner of the song and the owner of the specific version. For example, if I wanted to include Ella's version of Honeysuckle Rose from Juan-Les-Pins, I'd have to get rights from Verve to use that version of the song and rights from who ever owns...

For those who haven't heard yet, Jelly Roll Productions will be hosting a special Fri night dance the night before The Basie Centennial Ball featuring, you guessed it, Harlem Renaissance Orchestra ! Also, you all will probably dig this: there's going to be a panel discussion called "Remembering Basi...

Three cheers for Chiaroscuro! Kalman, I totally dig the song Doo Wah Doo on that Whorehouse cd with Ralph Sutton (also on the Chiaroscuro label), and I second Nate Dogg's Hootie! recommendation, which, incidentally, has some cool solos by drummer extraordinaire Jackie Williams who many of you have s...
