If you get "The Fabulous Sidney Bechet" and the Proper Box Set on him, you should be covered for a good intro to his stuff.

For anybody who thinks that Prima sucks (and I agree alot of his stuff does), I advise you to check out some of his earliest stuff from his New Orleans Gang in the 30's. There are 3 Classics Chronologicals that are actually quite good. If you want an example and you have the "Engine Room" ...

I actually bought the jazz archives CD last week. It's very solid. Some great bands he was involved with. The guy can play trombone faster, better and cleaner than anyone I've ever heard.

Although I'll admit my trombone knowledge isn't very extensive.

Vic Dickenson

I have 2 questions regarding this Trombone player.

1) Has anybody got any of his stuff (sessions he led OR soloed on extinsively) that they would reccommend?

2) Does anyone know what song is being played during his mini bio segment on the "A Great Day in Harlem" Video?

I once heard a bad Casio keyboard version of Woodchoppers ball with a drum machine backing it. It souded like a horribly disfigured accordian pounding out staccato polka notes for someones bar mitzvah in 1973.

What it didn't sound like, was blues.

It's one thing to "give direction", and another thing to dictate every small detail to the point where they are robots. Part of beauty of dancing to a live band is the unknown.

The tempos of these recordings fit a 60/10/10/10/10 split among tempos: 60% from 130-160 BPM, 10% from 160-200, 10% over 200, 10% 100-130, 10% under 100 (Bluesy ballads: no sweet or jazz ballads). 10% between 160-200???!!!??? I want to avoid more tempo discussions like the plague, but seriously, th...

Although it's something of a tangent, I actually prefer DJ'd band battles over actual DJ battles. For example, what we're doing at an upcoming event is to have one DJ spin 1/2 hour of one artist and then another DJ spins 1/2 hour of another artist. But, that's really more about hearing an hour of g...

If you find another one please pick it up for me if you can. I'm so lazy about buying things online.
