The funny thing is no one outside the DJ's noticed, and by the end of the weekend it was one of the most popular songs to dance too. I think it helped that it does not normally have lyrics so it doesn't stand out.

My Favorite is the Earl Hines version mentioned in the first post. Budd Johnson plays the awesome sax on that track. Every time I DJ that version I gete at least one person asking who does that version of that song. There is no other song I DJ that gets that response every time I play it.

I think "Don't dance and DJ" should be a guideline and not a rule. I also think that it should be obvious, but often isn't, to anyone with a sense of professionalism. Although part of the vagueness over professionalism is related to the old conversations over dj compensation where some de...

I always tell new DJ's to watch who is not dancing and see if you can rotate them onto the dance floor without upsetting the total amount of dancers on the dance floor, flow of the music, or mood of the room. I would think for the sylabus you would want to talk about DJing at different times of the ...

Were the requests from locals or visitors? If it was locals, perhaps that stuff is common and they are used to/expect it/believe it to be normal Lindy Hop music. Something I've found DJing events away from home is that every scene seems to have a few nuggets that are not necessarily what you'd expe...

Are dancers musical tastes changing?

I just had a series of the weirdest requests at Soflex during late night. within a span of an hour I got a request for Tom Jones-Sex Bomb, another one for anything from the latest Justin Timberlake record, and a third request for anything modern. All of these sound like songs that are more appropria...

What I usually do is, I start the night with a big list of all the songs I think I want to play. I sort it in groups of 3 songs that will fit well together and moves the music somewhere. From this big list I decide while DJing which mini set I want to use while DJing. Of course while DJing I often c...

I no longer have any specific DJ personality, I now have mulitple personalties. I just like to play good music mix in some common stuff with stuff that people have not heard. Every time I DJ my personality molds to the crowd. Even playing at the same venue the crowd might like faster stuff on any gi...

There is a CD that has many naughty blues and jazz songs called Copulation Blues. I actually play, New Rubbin' on that darn old thing by Oscar's Chicago Swingers occasionally at Lindy hop events, it's an uptempo classic jazz song few people notice how dirty the lyrics are, but if they listened they ...
