Keep the suggestions coming!

Meanwhile, turns out my wife read my mind and bought Nicky's Jazz for Kids (Amazon link), which has a nice cut of Nat King Cole singing "Three Blind Mice".

in search of swinging nursery rhymes

Many of you know I'm the father of a one year old daughter. Many of you can only imagine the horror that is the "Baby Einstein" collection of children's music. Either you get lame synthesizers doing "children's" version of classical music or you get insipid singers doing nursery ...

I've got an Onkyo SE-U55. It's the same basic deal as the Creative Extigy, except it natively supports 44KHz audio, rather than the 48KHz of the Extigy. That makes it better for dealing with CD audio. I've used it for snarfing music from my DirecTV box, directly from the digital audio output jack. I...

I was just playing with Apple's store. It ain't bad, but it ain't great either. I typed in several big names (Basie, Armstrong, Ellington, and Goodman) and got back exactly 100 tracks from each artist. That implies that they've probably got more than that in there, but only return the first 100 trac...

There's a whole thread on 78rpm records over in the tech section . Capsule summary: you can do it, but you need to have a special needle, a speed-adjustable 78rpm turntable, and a microphone amp (versus the usual equalizing turntable amps). You'll also want software to clean up all the pops, clicks,...

Beiderbecke is, of course, one of the pioneers on jazz trumpet. The band he played with for most of his career, the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, was not quite as exciting. Somewhere, I picked up a "Bix 'n Bing" CD, when both Bix and Bing Crosby were with the Whiteman orchestra. Not bad stuff, ...

For what it's worth, before somebody spent the bucks on Nero, they should check out the free Exact Audio Copy . It's free, it's extremely accurate about error correction, it's free, and it has nice support for burning discs. You also get to use the free Lame as your MP3 encoder, which everybody seem...

oooh, if you have a laptop, maybe you could try ripping a song in-store with both setups and see what you think of the output. When I went to GuitarCenter, it was clear that their record players had been pretty seriously trashed by their customers. One of them had a warped platter, another had a pl...

I found a great web site, 78rpm.com , that has more information than you could possibly want on 78's. Short form: - the grooves on 78's are bigger, so it helps to have a bigger needle - you only need one cartridge/tone-arm/etc. - some 78's work by vibrating the needle up and down, others go side to ...

Okay, so I've been digging around the net. The audiophile crowd will happily charge you multiple thousands of dollars for turntables. This seems to get you a belt-drive mechanism. It seems that common features among audiophile players are very heavy platters combined with some kind of locking mechan...

Somehow, I was thinking more along the lines of the generic Technics turntables that you see all the DJs using, versus other possibly more esoteric gear. For $10K, I could buy a hell of a lot of CDs.

The Bobs do a nice cover of "Fever" that I'll play regularly. A lot of their stuff is goofy, but they can swing when they want to. The Bobs are much better to dance to than newer acapella groups like daVinci's Notebook or Schrodinger's Cat. Of course, you could always go for vocalese. Lamb...

buying a record player, dealing with 78's

My great uncle Ruby Braff recently passed away and I inherited eight boxes of records. I still haven't opened them to go through them, although I believe they're mostly 33rpm LPs. I need to buy a turntable suitable for hooking up to my computer (via an offboard USB soundcard), so I can play them in ...

That's a pretty cool gizmo.

I've been a big fan of SonicBlue's products. The equivalent SonicBlue thing is the Rio Central. They want $1149 for that, where the TDK thing is $380. Big difference. Even if the Rio Center is really, really better, it ain't that much better.
