Isn't it the AAFBand led by RMcK? Yes, you are probably right. Tom Lord has all "Swing Shift" recordings between August 18, 1944, and April 20, 1945, as by The American Band Of The AEF Directed By Ray McKinley . It then lists a Ray McKinley Trio date on May 20, 1945, and then another &quo...

It was recorded very extensively in 1939-1940, by Glenn Miller, Teddy Wilson, Jimmie Lunceford, Les Brown, Andy Kirk, Mildred Bailey, Jack Teagarden, Doctor Sausage and his Five Pork Chops (!), and the Casa Loma Orchestra. The vocalist on the original Miller version (1939) was Marion Hutton. Funnily...

Glenn was already dead when this was recorded. It is by Ray McKinley's band (with Ray on vocals):

Ray McKinley and his Band: "Swing Shift" recording, Olympia Theatre, Paris, France, May 24, 1945.

Thirteen albums from the Neatwork label have just appeared on Emusic (also on Itunes and Spotify). For those of you that don't know, Neatwork issued complete collections of alternative takes in chronological order. The albums available so far are: Benny Carter - 1936-1937 (The Alternative Takes in C...

One thing about Spotify that sucks is that their playlists are not stable. Albums can disappear from one day to the next. For instance, I just discovered that the Hep Records Benny Goodman albums (BG Plays Eddie Sauter, BG Plays Fletcher Henderson, etc.) have disappeared. Instead of telling you this...

I've had the same experience with other Membran box sets. The Artie Shaw set was not that bad, though.

"If you like [...] Mr Sun TO warm your bones all day" makes more sense to me.

Great song BTW - one on that box set (Mosaic 235) that I didn't pay attention to before.

I suppose that the basic song structure and harmonies go back to 'I Got Rhythm', later reused by Don Redman, Fletcher Henderson and many others. Most of the individual riffs in the Big Apple song can be found in other songs from the 30's. Fun Spotify project: Find 100 riff songs from the swing era b...

After searching the dark corners of the Internet, I am pretty sure that the 78 version of Losers Weepers is the fast 2:20 version found in poor sound quality on various compilations. I'm a bit disappointed since I enjoy the medium-paced version so much. Going off on a tangent (sorry, Eyeball), can y...
