I love "Wade In The Water" I'm just bored with Eva Cassidy's version. I prefer Sonia Dada's. My god... the soul just pours out of the speakers.

If this definition works for "Groove Swing" *shudder*, then any song that uses blue notes is blues, would be a perfectly acceptable definition of blues. I think we can all agree though, that it isn't. S'what happens when you try and invent a new genre without understanding the differences...

Julius pretty much hit on the head... the definition is unsatisfactory for the exact same reasons why emotional content is for you re: the blues. Should I point out that if certain progressions and tonal choices have "emotional" context then using the emotional content of a song is a valid...

By labeling in advance (ad hominum) any comment or qualification to the contrary as being racist, it becomes a shockingly racist statement, itself. No it wasn't and no it isn't. It was use of humor. Even if it was literal it would be a statement of intolerance not of racism, even taking into accoun...

Re: The Blues

It results in a fairly useless, overbroad definition that runs contrary to everyone's understanding of what "Blues" music is. Instead, I submit that Blues music must be definied musically: either 1) by a musical theory of chord progressions and scales that produces a coherent genre of mus...

I guess I'll reiterate my original point: WHO CARES? If no one cares why bother with the name? Why not use the ones that already exist? Why use any at all? Someone cares. Maybe just not you... do you use the term? It's going to be impossible to have an exact definition that everyone agrees on. How ...

*snip an amazing amount of supposition with no bearing on reality* In my perception, "groove" dancers adopted the term, themselves. Really? I certainly don't hear many "groove dancers" refering to themselves as anything other than lindy hoppers. Here's a very loose definition fr...

I would say that the term "groove" in the current case is not purely about the music. The dancers and the dance itself provide a context for this discussion. Do they? How so? Are you saying that the music is defined by the style of dance that is done to it and not the other way around? So...

Give me a break. Absolutely not. I think we all know the basic idea of what "groove" music and dancing is. Then share. When I challenge people like this they usually can't come up with any kind of reasonable and generally acceptable application. They use the label as a catch all. Like bac...

there's no meaning behind it other than to exclude people that don't match up. kalman I'll just assume you're joking, because that's a pretty silly statement. Despite how dumb it may be to use the word "groove," or however much some people might not like it, it's the word that currently d...

Perhaps, but like or not, "groove" has become the designated Lindyhopper term for the larger group of more modern, slower, jazz and blues, not just a subgenre of soul-jazz. In my opinion, it is good to know what the words "groove" "lindy hop" "swing" "ja...

As an aside, it's sad that such a great word has become so contentious. A jazz text i was reading recently stated that groove and swing are synonymous with good jazz. Out there? That 2/4 Swing/HotJazz music is woefully underplayed everywhere.
