Dallas Exchange

This is a "past event," but I wanted to give big kudos to the DJing at the Dallas Exchange. Jeff Miller, Jerry Warwick, Dave Jacoby, and Kalman all did a great job. Jeff especially had a really inspiring set to open the Saturday after hours. Thanks!! That's exactly what I meant in the Swin...

I keep my original CDs alphabetical with all genres together for simplicity. All "swing" stuff together. I thought about segmenting it into genres, but doing so is too sloppy, especially with artists playing multiple genres on certain CDs. I also do have seperate Non-danceable "Jazz&q...

Re: DJ BPM

For kicks, try measuring the BPM at the beginning of a song, during solos, and towards the end to see how much our type of music can vary without drum machines and synthesizers. Absolutely; an often-ignored point. When I get the chance, I sometimes indicate the range. The popular 7-minute live Basi...

Ponder ponder ponder. Not to mention whether 120GBs is really necessary--or if it isn't enough. If price is not the primary consideration, go with the presumption that anything that is the standard today will be outdated in 6 months and obsolete in a year and a half. In other words, I don't think i...

That's very general. I like the idea of DJing little "sets' of 3-4 tunes and seguing to another set. Not to be redundent, but that's what I have always tended to do as a default. I actually think in terms of 2 songs in the core of the "mini-set," and the songs one either end as segue...

Not sure about "Obscure", but if you play anything from a "Laserlight" disc, then yes ;) which is unfortunate cause some of their sessions are great, like the Earl Hines live broadcasts from the late 40's. although the recordings on the nat king cole trio recordings aren't that ...

As for hour-long slots, I don't think anyone prefers them, but deals with them. However, the benefit is that I get to dance more if I'm not DJing all weekend. I also get to hear what other people are playing and get new ideas. As an Exchange organizer, I reduce the number of DJs so as to increase th...

I've noticed quite the opposite.

Somewhat stating common knowledge, here: CD-Rs allow me to carry the danceable songs from ten CDs or more on one CD. They also allow 80 minutes of music, instead of sometimes only 45 minutes on an original CD, only 5-10 of which is danceable. They also allow me the flexibility of either organizing b...

As a patron of an exchange, I would rather have a more "exclusive" DJ lineup, so that I know I'm getting my money's worth while dancing. As a DJ, I would rather have "all comers." That way, I can DJ. Well put. :) I've wrongly copped an attitude in the past  , but I ...

This is an interesting thread suggesting that slower music is beginner-friendly. For years, I have battled the notion in Austin that playing "beginner-friendly" music implies playing nothing under 150 BPM because beginners want to do nothing but quickly shuffle and wiggle through 6-count s...

I have heard and read elsewhere that they sped up recordings so as to meet the 3:00 time limit, but I doubt it was so prevalent as to be the case on all or even a majority of early recordings, or the only explanation why an early recording seems fast.

I really don't understand why all this stuff isn't integrated into a single inexpensive program withpout having to get a huge package like sound forge, or BPM. Laurie has itunes and it does this really well. So did sonic stage. It can't be that tuff to program... Agreed, from a fellow non-programme...
