In SE Michigan, we're more concerned about our venues than the DJs. The venues can be lost, so if we're asking anybody to tip, it's usually to the bartender or waitress. The cover pays the rent, but if dancing's the draw for a commercial venue, it's negotiable whether or not the instructor and/or D...

Re: Jive at Five that doesn't fade out?

Apart from those, my favorite version is by Jo Jones Trio w. Ray Bryant (1958). It's out on a brand new super hi fi disc [Nasal, Frankie-Manning-like voice] "You got fiiiive fingers on each hand...." 8) Definitely one of my favorite versions, too. The whimper-out (but not fade-out) ending...

You know I am a big Fleetwood Mac fan, I think Lindsey Buckingham is great. However, as you said in other posts on this thread, you pushed the line for a few years. You ended up getting a ticket. You almost forced him to do it. As I wrote earlier in the thread, I rebelliously pushed the envelope on...

6) Timing -- The breaks and ending are all predictable. The thing I HATE about older songs is that I don't know when they're ending so I can apply a big finish. It's like they just stop mid-beat sometimes. As far as the end of a song, that's odd to me. Most older swing songs employ 32 bar or 12 bar...

Debating whether "Fever" swings or not misses the point. Lawrence, while he complains about the guidelines, actually follows them as closely as anybody else. Actually, Nathan, this entire discussion (and the inadvisability of the Austin rules) boils down to the core debate over whether a ...

I can see where I may be hypocritical without realizing it, and thats why I'm very appreciative of the comments made. I've been thinking about this issue a bit while driving around this past week. I guess after being successfully self employed for over 4 years, as a independent music teacher and mu...

2. A deejay on any set should work to [not "must"] keep the right variety in his or her set. Variety that is desirable is to move between blues (that swings), jazz, or neo-swing, big bands and small combos, fast, medium and slower tempos. Variety that is not desirable is to include more t...

There is an error correction switch/box in ITunes in the same "Import" tab of "Preferences" that I described above. It was probably not turned on if you did not know about it, because it is set "off" as a default (presumably because most consumers want fast ripping over...

Does anyone know about any current reviews that compare MP3 rippers? Does ITunes now use LAME as its encoder (explaining why it came up with EXACTLY the same-sized MP3 as EAC using LAME)? Second, has anyone else recently here done A/B tests of EAC against the new ITunes ripper (or any similar A/B t...

but are you saying that musicians that can dance can also be hurt by the fact that they do both? or are you saying the crowd isn't interested in hearing "too advanced" music, which may or may not have been recorded by a musician who may have danced? I don't have enough experience to back ...

Pointing out that a small minority of great musicians were (surprisingly enough) also great dancers just confirms my ultimate point: it can help, but there is not direct or necessary causal connection. The Ella example came in retort to my comment about Basie and Ellington, not Ella. Basie and Ellin...

Lawrence doesn't seem to care about the intent, mostly, it seems like anyway, he just wants to assert his opinion. And that opinion is loud and clear already: don't do "Tip the DJ" commercials". Honestly, if its novelty runs out and people start ignoring them the same they do the liv...

I'm not in this for the money, so thats why we don't pursue getting a bar cut or charging people. I just wanted to pursue a different way of thinking about what we do. Here's a different way of thinking about what we do. Instead of spending time recording commercials designed to do exactly what you...

Heaven forbid anyone act against this forum's popular opinion... I thought the forum was for discussion, not handing down "do's and don'ts" and proclamations that someone "should know better". He wanted our opinion, we gave it to him, he acted on his own thinking... ...how dare ...

The "dual CD" model seems to work. Moving to a "single playlist" model with some kind of pre-defined or clickable crossfading between the songs is an OK compromise...but it certainly doesn't address all the needs of a DJ. When you re-thought the whole enterprise outside the box....
