I'm not sure if this applies to the current version of Disco XT, but I exchanged email with the developer several times when using the previous version regarding this very issue and others. I don't have my laptop in front of me to check out the specifics, but under the settings there was a checkbox ...

I am a little unsure about multi channel sound card support with Disco XT - I prefer to have a monitor channel, and separate channels for Player A and Player B. MegaSeg does support this. I'm still on the last major version of Disco XT (4.8.1), but the preferences do have an option to use an extern...

Someone still has to bring a thing capable of storing music in it. And has to take the time to get it plugged in & working properly. And someone needs to tend the recording mix -- it's not always possible for one person to multitask between the live sound requirements and the recording requirem...

Today Amazon has "Best of Duke Ellington", 26 tracks for $1.99.

http://www.amazon.com/mp3

Even my inadequate Ellington collection has most of these songs, but there are a few in there that are new to my collection. Easily worth the $1.99.

Lest someone be tempted to bring 'ickie' back into currency, I ran across an article on Wikipedia yesterday that indicates 'iky' is (was?) an ethnic slur against Jews. It might be best to avoid using the word 'ickie' in reference to people, just in case.

A couple of different professional recording engineers have told me in the past that while you are placing the microphones and listening to your mix in the setup phase, try to listen to something you know is an excellent recording... something that you want your recording to sound like. Use that re...

You shouldn't have to mess with EQs and such on the spot, in fact I'd surmise that you very much do not want those sort of things, because you can never undo what you did. You can adjust all of that stuff after the fact, assuming you have the right software (anything from Garage Band to Tracktion to...

Maybe Solomon or Jonathan or Paul or somebody of that ilk can jump in here, but... If you're not looking to have a recording engineer do the work, which I doubt if you want to record this on a weekly basis as you mentioned, then you'll probably get the most satisfactory results by just setting up a ...

Re: Strategies for reducing treble harshness on 1930s tracks

Have you run an RTA on both recordings to look at the content? Audacity has a built in RTA that is good enough for these purposes. What's an RTA :?: Here is what the RTA output of Audacity looks like (I forget what song I used to make this...but it was some modern pop song with lots of bass in the ...

I wouldn't recommend a guitar amp as they tend to sound terrible when you're trying to fill up a room (quality varies quite a lot though). However, they are easy to find and generally cheap, so they make a reasonable backup. Even if you don't get one with an aux input, you can just buy an adapter t...

I'm not sure what the "70's system" is, but if it's a mixing board of any sort it should have 1/4" mono inputs. Just attach some RCA-to-1/4" adapters to the end of your RCA cable (available at Radio Shack) and plug into the appropriate spot on two channels for left and right. Or ...

A ground loop wouldn't cause this -- the characteristic sign of a ground loop is that 60Hz hum you hear in the speakers (i.e. think of the sound you hear near big electrical panels, or coming from an electric guitar amp when they first plug in the guitar). If you're sure the laptop is playing OK (e....

I wouldn't say that I don't want to hear it anymore, but overexposure has made Bechet's "Blues My Naughty Sweety Gives To Me" a lot less interesting for me.

The only down side is - what happens if your HD fries? Do you lose thousands of tunes? Without a back up, you die, right? That's always a possibility, but with how cheap data storage is it's easily avoidable. As long as you have a backup in a different physical location, I believe a person is at ev...
