Ann Arbor's own Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings (www.porkjazz.com) and Royal Garden Trio (http://www.theroyalgardentrio.com/) are two of our top local acts.

Make sure you don't ignore our local favorites, Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings. Granted they have a large selection of 20's numbers as well, but they are too hott not to consider.

"Harlem Heat" is one of the best discs in my collection. Great songs, Hadyn.

The Gypsy Strings of Detroit has a live version of Dark Eyes on their first disc, "Jazz Le Hot." On their second outing, "Blue Drag," they play a studio version. Both of them melt my face off... of course, hearing them play it live in person is the best, haha.

I own a copy of "Stomp Off, Let's Go!" by The Bob Crosby Orchestra and the Bob Cats. It's on the ASV label and contains recordings from 1936-1940. I like it quite a bit - Crosby's version of "Diga Diga Doo," although a little long, is pretty kick-butt.

The CD cases are cheap so I don't recommend using them for transport; only for storage. The tabs break with a minum of pressure (i.e., trying to place a CD into the case). The Jimmie Lunceford set, which I was kind of excited to receive, actually has terrible quality on all four discs. I actually co...

I highly recommend Harlem Heat, but it's the same with me - I haven't heard a hard copy, genuine CD of the other MBRB discs so I can make no comparisons. However I was still impressed.

I listened to both tracks and preferred the unmastered version. The mastered one sounded tinny and strange to my ears.

Dave Bennet is a really cool, friendly dude. He has played several events and nights in the Detroit area, is quite an accomplished musician, and seems to really enjoy playing for dancers. He also plays with the Hot Club of Detroit. I highly recommend him and his work. I believe HCOD recently release...
