What exactly makes you assume that? MacBook's use a Realtek sound chip... the same Realtek chip found in a multitude of Windows machines.

I stream 256kbps MP3 files from my MBP 3,1 to my Xbox360 via Connect360. It's then sent as a 5.1 DD signal to my Onkyo TX-SR504 (which I need to upgrade) that drives Infinity FL, FR, RL & RR speakers, a JBL CC speaker and a JBL sub (though with most files it's only driving the FL, FR and sub.)

They are also now in 256 kbps AAC as well.

This may finally get me using the iTunes Store for music, assuming the new higher price point option doesn't become the norm.

That is not what I said at all. I simply stated that ipods (and mp3 players in general) will pump out a better signal than your laptop's on board sound card, which is generally a cheap generic chip unless you have a gaming machine. Laptops also tend to produce a "dirty" signal, made worse...

I used to put charts like these together to disprove the misconception that I played nothing put fast old music. I love playing with numbers, however I rarely have full night sets any more, which are the type of sets that can produce meaningful data. But, I do have a nice big set list from this year...
