re kitkat: what makes it sound trad-ish/20s to you? the styling of the soloists? the feel of the rhythm section? the arrangements? the quality of the recordings? I can hear why you might say that -- there's a certain quality to the great recordings you linked to that wont be recreated, but that does...

Bria is great, and most of what she does for swing dances is fun and energetic...not worthy of this thread I'd say, unlike her Buble-esque tracks. Her album "Fresh" and it's relation to Buble, however, are not all that indicative of her dance bands, thankfully, as seen in those links Dave ...

The major comps are mostly to live music these days, which i'm all in favor of. I think if I had enough recordings that were of contemporary bands, or of live dance recordings (assuming they were the right length and didn't lose energy somewhere in the middle) I'd play them instead of the older usua...

I've found that the New Orleans Jazz Vipers have a few tracks that can get some of the crowd you seem to be describing. Try out their version of "Zonky" for a high energy faster tune. They'll never know it's a cover of an old 1920's tune. :)

I'm planning to record a big band playing at our exchange this year. I have a sound engineer that I normally work with, and he has recommended I also hire an engineer that deals with recording equipment specifically. I haven't yet talked to him, so I dont have details, but I have talked to the band ...

all he did was state an opinion about mid-tempo shim shams? why get all bent out of shape?

and besides, it led to the posting of a fun fast shim sham video with Frankie, so what's the real harm?

A forum of only tacit agreement is boring.

It's true, there are some dancers that don't like drum solos. There are also some dancers that don't like chocolate milk (poor souls). There are some old men that don't like swing music. There are some cats that have no tails.

what were we talking about?...

who cares if it's true? How does it fit in the context of your discussion anyway? (and just so you know, saying that "some" people feel a certain way is not a provocative statement to use to make a point) Your reason for making that statement in the first place seems disjointed. The clip o...

Yes, I misquoted you to make a point. You missed it. you say LPs are warm and CDs are cold -- is the music playing on them any warmer or colder? you said, "a real connection to the music in your hands as you handle the records and then just sit there listening to the music and holding and readi...

"That's a thing about <instruments> over LPs - warmth vs cold and the perception of holding something real...a real connection to the music in your hands as you handle the <instrument> and then just sit there <making> the music. The music and the knowledge just slip right into your heart and yo...
