The Best Thing I Ever Did As A DJ...

...was to get my own equipment. Within reason of course. When I read through many of the posts hear on SDJS there is a lot of talk about whether one should DJ from a laptop or CDs or Vinyl, and how to solve one of many recurring problems. My theory is that YOU as a DJ should be responsible for every...

Trev...I noticed that you had an issue with someone bumping into the table while you were playing vinyl and had a little skip. I've recently made a habit of bringing along a simple addition to my vinyl setup making my records nearly "skip proof". It's an old trick that a lot of club DJ's u...

I frequently DJ LP's only at several events in Chicago and around the Midwest. It is definitely a pain in that ass that is sometimes worth it, and sometimes not. When I spin vinyl I bring two direct drive turntables and my own mixer. This allows me to cue with precision and transition smoothly betwe...

I love hip-hop jazz stuff as well as finding the source material for it. Check these out: Madlib - Shades of Blue US3 - Broadway & 52nd Guru - Jazzamatazz Of course the Beastie Boys used some Three Sounds and tons of other Jazz samples in Pauls Boutique. There's a cool series of CD's called the ...

I would allow the DJ's to pick their artist before hand and play only the music by that artist. This would allow the DJ to prepare and really provide a wide perspective of the artist. Pulling names from a hat could lead to trouble of DJ's not knowing the particular artist, pulled from the hat, very...

I definitely play live recordings. Applause isn't really distracting if you use it right. Think about it....If you were seeing a live band, people would usually applaud after songs. Sometimes I like to play a few live songs in a row, fading one applause into the next. I think it gives your set a liv...

I have had nothing but bad luck with NuMark and Gemini products.

I hooked up the dance studio that I teach at with the Stanton650

This is their lowest model with Key corrected pitch control, which is awesome for teaching, and can proove useful at times while DJ'ing. I like this unit a lot.

Converting Vinyl to CD

For the past year, I've been buying most of my Jazz on Vinyl. It's cheaper, you find stuff you might not otherwise, and I just like it. I also just purchased a collection of over 3000 LP's and should be receiving them next week. I know that I'll want to start getting stuff onto CD right away as I'm ...

WOW, that's quite a project! I also have been starting to do some DB of my music and I found a few different programs that help quite a bit. They don't list as much information as you're looking to enter, but at least a lot of the basics get listed for you. http://www.firetongue.com/cd-database.html...
