Bought last Week end: A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra by Oscar Peterson... 10 of the 12 songs are wonderfully danceable! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ygj97i68g77r Just listened to some of the samples. Nice swinging groove, although for me the piano improvisation conflicts wi...

Just got this, one of the best CDs I've bought so far: Tippin' In Erskine Hawkins Past Perfect label 6 of the 14 tracks are great, some others are pretty good too. Remastered sound quality is excellent. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000057E5H http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:6...

Re: The "Neatwork" label - got any

I just discovered this excellent little label; Neatwork seems to concentrate on non-issued altrenate takes. Any of you cats/kittens got any of this? How's the remastering? If ithe samples I am hearing on cdconnection.com are any indication, it should be excellent. I have done a fairly thorough sear...

Re: Newbie trying to grow a swing collection!!!!

If anyone can tell me what CDs to are good to buy, or versions of songs to avoid, or whatever, the help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! As well as this site itself, check out the following (I believe some of the writers are also members of 'swingdjs') - http://www.paulandsharon.com/the_list....

Re: What moves people, these days?

... today's world and music are significantly different from those of the swing era. The older music may still get people's toes tapping, but I think it doesn't have the same visceral effect now that it did back then. So, what does have that effect, today? What music compels people to dance (swing ...

Re: Avid Entertainment Label in UK

Hi all, I searched on the forum, but found no thread subject related to this label out of the U.K.: http://www.avidgroup.co.uk/ I just received the 10 CD set of Oscar Peterson in various group configurations from the early 1950s. Didn't know if others have bought sets from the label. Has nice packa...

Good sound quality version of 'Lavender Coffin' ?

Can anyone recommend a CD with a good sound quality version of 'Lavender Coffin' ? I've listened to all the samples available on allmusic and the sound quality seems poor on all of them -

Most CD liner notes (albeit sometimes surprisingly great resources) really don't do a good job of talking about the arrangers for the artists...they usually concentrate on the artists themselves, if you are really interested in finding out more details about the inner workings of the artist's setup...

I however have come across it in linner notes. Horace ran out of money every so often and selling charts was a form of income. Chick Webb did buy some material off him. Webbs band may have slightly modified them, but the basic arrangement are very much the same. Big John's Special is a good example...

Do people on the forum here own standard jazz discographies? I don't! Sounds like a good idea though. Arranger credit is often given in New Hot Discography and the Brian Rust discographies, plus many of the 'newer' reference books. This one? http://www.mainspringpress.com/book_rust.html Looks good,...

Fletcher might not have arranged for Chick but Horace his younger brother surely did... Hi, Sorry to cast any doubt on this, but are you sure? Horace Henderson's name as an arranger for Chick Webb is not on any of my Chick Webb CD liner notes, or in any of these articles .... http://en.wikipedia.or...
