We had a chance to see and dance to Gatemouth this past summer at the National Folk Festival. After the performance, we visited him in the trailer. He seemed really tired, and thin. He seemed weary with doing performances . I hope he's well! Mostly he played very slow blues and folky stuff, because ...

Mose Allison

I love using Van Morrison's album in which he sings the songs of Mose Allison. Much cleaner for dancing. Mose is one of our favorite guys to just listen to. We sat 5 feet away from him when he came to Maine about 10 years ago for a small, intimate summer gig. After the performance, my whitehaired hu...

SwingME!

Well, folks, we're finally over our exhaustion from putting on SwingME 2002 and it looks like we're gonna DO IT AGAIN this summer, July 30 through August 1. (That's coastal Maine in the middle of the summer heat, which should be pretty sweet.) The dance at the island yacht club with "Victory Swing" ...

This thread is sooooo relevant to me right now! Thanks everyone who is posting their advice! We are starting a monthly dance series in January and I am getting hammered on to play neo swing, waltz, chacha, latin, country/western etc. We (the two dj's involved) have already decided it will be a mixed...

IF you like Rockabilly, may I call your attention to one of our local bands, called "King Memphis" which has three cds with lots of danceable music? www.kingmemphis.com

Thanks to various posts here, I have just finished putting all my dance music cds in a data base (MS Access). To my horror I discovered there are over 800 of them! And I actually bought them all - well, all but about 10! So it's definitely time for insurance.... Since I'm djing almost exclusively fr...

Wade in the Water

Reading this thread I think some of us need to lighten up. When "Wade" comes on for the umpteenth time, I just make a big production of rolling up my pant legs. It gets a laugh from those who are paying attention, and quizzical stares from the newcomers and people who never listen to ANY lyrics. :D

Track 4 (after the intro) - I think this is the one.

Paul Krakauske, the best lindy DJ in Maine, played this the other night. You can't sit still.

Wade in the Water

I like the instrumental version by Charlie Hayden and Hank Jones on a CD called "Steal Away: Spirituals, Hymns and Folk Songs." Since everyone is familiar enough with the Eva Cassidy version to recognize the tune instantly, this interpretation is interesting to dance to.

Kumquat?

Bill Borgeda played a tune he identified as "Kumquat" by Aaron Bell at SONH. I've emailed him to get the cd info but not heard back. Can't seem to find the cd online. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd like to put in a vote for "Till Tom Special", off the Peter Davis CD, which has a long-enough-to-get-lined-up intro.

I think we may find that, over time, some of the neo stuff will survive. (Probably some of the "old" swing died mercifully, too.) I've been using some of it sprinkled into the mix like a seasoning for some time. Also some - er - rockabilly from local bands (like King Memphis.) I still like Alien Fas...

Birthday Jams

I had a big birthday bash in October. Here are the songs I had them play for me!
Happy Birthday Song - Sammy Mayfield - 4:44 (for the Westies)
I'll Die Happy - Louis Jordan - 3:06 (You've gotta love it!)
