Some define swing as a type of two-step. In the most ambitious technical attempt to describe swing, the American composer and musicologist Virgil Thomson defined it as "a form of the two-step in which the rhythm is expressed quantitatively by instruments of no fixed intonation, the melodic, har...

I use the Native Instruments Audio 2 with Traktor and I like it. I've used on both Macs and PCs so that's not an issue. I haven't done extensive research but it's the cheapest I've found with two outs, decent sound, and portable. I have some more expensive ones but they are harder to travel with sin...

Re: Tempo analysis of Duke at Fargo 1940

t Traffic Jam 308 308! What the hell did they dance to that? I mean, yeah, I know Frankie and friends could swing out at that tempo, and if they had a choreo they could dance a pleasing routine, but I refuse to believe anyone else in the ballroom could do anything resembling lindy at that tempo, le...

I'm also very aware of the fact that new people take up lindy hop every day - something that's _so_ five minutes ago for me is new and exciting for them. A song can go from brand new to overplayed and only you have heard it. It's really difficult since we are dealing with music over a range of almo...

I have picked out a few more myself (as you can see, I am mainly interested in non-blues songs from the classic swing era): Sidney Bechet & Muggsy Spanier - Sweet Lorraine [1938] - 100 bpm If you like Sweet Lorraine, you might like the Metronome version with Frank Sinatra on vocals, Nat Cole on...

The Basie Columbia box set, America's #1 Band, is another source for the live Basie tracks. The Jazz Archives cd Count Basie, The Golden Years Vol 1, opens with the announcer going "We're stomping at the Savoy" and it goes into Moten Swing. Then he announces the band and introduces "s...

You could look into Ben Webster and Lester Young; they both play beautiful ballads. A few examples include _The Lester Young Trio_ with Nat King Cole, _A Musical Romance_ Lester Young & Billie Holiday, and _King of the Tenors_ Ben Webster.
