I have done several "musicality" classes at different events. Unlike the normal "musicality" class, where people are taught steps and tricks to hit different breaks, I generally walk people through three main styles (20's 2-beat, late 30's-40's 4-beat swing, and post 1950 groovy...

I just wish iTunes allowed you to output to two different devices at once. *dream* I'd be at least a little happier if iTunes let you choose an output device other than the system output. You have to set that up in system preferences. Otherwise there's an application (no longer supported but availa...

That's a strawman argument and you know it. No, I don't know it. I made my point. If you don't agree with it, fine. If I hurt your feelings, I apologize. I'll defer to the famous Mr. Szwed. He'll give you the answer that you endorse. He's always on a steady course, so talk to Mr. Szwed. Ha ha, now ...

but if John wants to nickpick, the thread title is "Stand out years in swing history" and not "stand out years in the swing-era." I don't want to nit-pick and I want to "nickpick" even less. If you went to a lecture or bought a CD called "Stand Out Years in Swing ...

Mckinney Cotton Pickers, early Chick Webb, early Fletcher Henderson, and all the early hot bands of the early 30s. Sure some of them are what I'd think of as 'pre-swing', but these guys are essential figures in 'swing history' so they seem utterly relevant. Also, utterly awesome. I agree that those...

So I guess I tend to favour particular artists (especially ones like Basie and Ellington who had such long careers) rather than particular years. I like hearing how their music changes over the years. I'm also beginning to get interested in groups of artists playing in particular cities in particul...

Great suggestions so far, but if I'd had a time machine I'd first go check out those battles between Walter Page's and Benny Moten's bands. Then I'd go check out the Savoy Sultans who are so under-recorded. As to the original question, I don't know if i can answer it since i don't think like that. I...

I have an old stereo system that i use. It was originally a Sony rack system but the Sony receiver died years ago so i'm using this old TV receiver. I have an airport plugged into one of channels and use that primarily. But I have some other peripherals plugged into it too. I still have the turntabl...

Huh?

What then is an 'imaginative recreation'?
I think some of those reviewers have a perspective different from those of dancers. Some of what moves them would leave us still standing at the bar ordering another round.

Other wise - super useful! What web site is that from?
It was from a Harvard class on the Swing Era taught by Robert Levin, but I don't think it is still on line.

Re: Educating about swing rhythms and schemes?

Do you have any: - recommendations for international teachers that are experts on that, whom we could ask to do a class when they are around In addition to those recommended, you might also ask Solomon Douglas who is a musician, DJ, and dancer. I don't know how much he is in Europe, but you could t...
