Unless it's from the pre-disney era, it's unlikely to be public domain.
Try googling the harry fox agency, if you feel like paying your licensing fees.

I was just re-reading Ted Gioia's History of Jazz, which I'd never read past the swing era before, I learned more about Gunther Schuller. I'd never realized Schuller was a musician himself who played on Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool sessions, and that he was involved in the "Third Stream" movement ...

I've never noticed live radio broadcasts as being either better recorded or more "safely" played. Generally, the easiest comparisons for me to make mentally are the Camel Caravan shows of the Goodman band, captured on "On the Air: 1937-1938" which, for the most part, smokes some of the studio takes....

TTD - sure, no problem. I can't remember, but I think there's some stuff on my blog somewhere about the same kind of stuff. www.swingguitar.blogspot.com Funny, I got started doing musicality classes by doing one with Steven Mitchell. It was great. Talking about dancing to what is actually going on i...

I have done several "musicality" classes at different events. Unlike the normal "musicality" class, where people are taught steps and tricks to hit different breaks, I generally walk people through three main styles (20's 2-beat, late 30's-40's 4-beat swing, and post 1950 groovy-swing) and talk abou...

3) Only one solo per song (helps enforce Rule #1). Feature a different soloist each song to divide the solos up evenly. 4) No "Sing, Sing, Sing;" No "Jump Jive & Wail;" No "In the Mood;" No "It Don't Mean A Thing." 5) Except for transitions, maintain a constant, walking bass line with no two-beat f...
