Blues Rising - San Francisco

Come on, get your Blues on...I couldn't say it better than Cid does: There is a new workshop coming up in march (san francisco). It is a blues workshop where focus is blues dancing as it has evolved on the current social floor. This revolutionary blues event will take the average social dancer to th...

How I missed this...I just don't know. Jimmy was a wonderful man, at least that was my experience with him. I had the pleasure of being an assistant stage mgr. for Verve Records 50th Anniversary back in 1994. Basically I dealt with a tremendous "who's who" of famous jazz musicians that cam...

So that means my lasting memory of you DJing Blues will be in Dallas:

You telling me that you aren't going to play Dr. Feelgood (Aretha Franklin)
and then when I turned my back to get my CD Book, you PLAYED it. (LOL)

Funny stuff.

New York has a budding Blues scene (one that I'm proud to say Devona
and I are building), that is holding late night parties about every 5-6
weeks so as not to over-saturate. We held our first large (venued) event
at the tail end of the Basie Cent. Weekend. There will be more to come!

Well, I sure apreciate those kind words Brenda & Mike. I hope I get to hear you soon Brenda...and Mike, you played a hellofa set. I want to be you when I grow up. By the way, that cd you gave me is great! Now if I only knew who half the artists were...maybe there's an order list someplace in you...

I consider myself fortunate to have been around to experience the genius that was Larry Levan. Larry would do all those things and much more, musically. You could tell what kind of a mood he was in if you listened to the songs he would play. I have to agree that he was the best. Paradise's Garage wo...

Imagine if "Cousin" Bruce Morrow were a DJ on the swing scene. That could be interesting, but in moderation. Devona, I think a DJ's personality and approach to announcing songs would "make or break" that situation. I'd like to have seen how the DJ's at Myrtle Beach handled things...

That's funny! The same thing happened with me here in NYC. I was over a local DJ's place having dinner and I was playing music from his collection on his stereo, and he kept saying, "I like that, who is it?" I kept having to remind him that it was HIS collection at HIS house. We couldn't s...

I tend to agree, I'm very generous with information about the music that I play. If someone wants to know the particulars (artist, album) I have no problem with that at all. I do a lot of "homework" to find what I'm looking for, but I'm a dancer...and it's for dancers! Besides, if someone ...

Oh you're funny all right! But I think that opening and closing each has it's own set of challenges. Starting an event can be beeyotch, since a crowd may not have arrived in force yet, then you don't want to play your best stuff for an empty room and your flow can get affected...but if you CAN hit t...

Devona - I agree with a great deal Charlie (Smunky) had to say. You & I played St.Louis' Cheap Thrills last weekend and at a BLUES BASED event the music was really different. Each DJ (hopefully) has some of his/her personality come through during a set. IMO, one of the responsibilities of being ...

I think that a great deal depends on the mood...meaning the mood I'm in while I'm DJing AND the mood that (hopefully) I've helped create. I see nothing wrong with slipping in an R&B/Soul song that fits in the flow of what playing. I played in St.Louis' last weekend, and since it was about blues,...
