You should realize that Soul has a timing issue. A lot of Chicago/electric blues, New Orleans rock n roll and almost anything recorded using the "Lieber & Stoller Kit", was in some form of Latin rhythm. Those are your basic precursors to Soul, so a lot of Soul is in a Latin time of som...

...His older stuff is more Ramsey Lewis Trio like. Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Now I'm wondering. Seems that a philistine like me might like it as mood music, but how do people with an actual ear for this kind of music find him? How do the samples of his newer stuff sound to you? Is he a ...

What can you tell me about Roy Meriwether?

If you play any soul in your sets, you might be familiar with the southern soul monster cut "Make It Real (Ride On)" by Betty Adams. It turns out Betty Adams is really Jewel Meriwether AKA Big Maceo's daughter, and her brother is Roy Meriwether who was produced that record and it's Roy tha...

Just about everyone I know with an interest in early Jamaican music quickly went and got the great Tougher Than Tough compilation. The second song in is Laurel Aitken's "Boogie In My Bones". You could easily slip it into the mix and no one would notice. But then again it is not a distinctl...

I got pretty sick of "Waddaya Want" very quickly and its been on my do-not-play list for a long time. However, it has a catchy tune, it has lyrics people love to sing along to, it has fun breaks, and it has energy. A lot of dancers love it. There's a reason for that. It's a Leiber & S...

I've always wondered about them. Fidelity issues aside, I've noticed that a lot of their songs which I like change tempo more than a few times. I wonder what the ratio of dancers-who-like-that/dancers-who-hate-that is.

(Is there a thread on that here?)

No, not exactly, Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn were in the the Blues Brothers band. I don't think Booker T. Jones played in the Blues Brothers Band. Nathan Of course you're right, I was just trying to take the piss. (You know the Blues Brothers were pretty reviled by purists everyw...
