Can anyone comment on the relative merits of the various Duke Ellington sets? So far I'm aware of three - Capitol, Reprise, and Small Group Sessions. I'm wondering if it's worth paying eBay prices for the first two.
Hi all, Been WAY TOO long since I've posted. But th...

Swing Artists who passed in 2006

Happy Holidays Everyone, I'm looking for a list of people who were performers in the swing era or int he swing style that have passed in 2006. I'm trying to cram in a tribute show for this upcoming Friday (Dec. 29th). Here is the list I have so far: Anita O'Day Kenny Davern Martha Tilton Georgia Gib...

The only Lou Monte in my collection is on a compilation of 4 LPs: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004XN1K?v=glance This is a wonderful set of music. A few dance numbers, but not really a dance set. Top notch arrangers and performers. Frank did himself proud in producing this set.

Not being a dance DJ, I obviously don't target toward the dance crowd. So I play the music I enjoy sharing. Who ever wants to listen is welcome. If you don't care for what I'm playing, there are 22 hours in the day on WKHR that some other music will be playing. So I have the distinct advantage of pl...

Ted Heath was a great band leader. A lot of his 1950s through 1960s releases are available on CD at:

In glancing at the web site, I didn't see the LP you have. That is a great recording.

Thanks to John for reminding me - tonight on WKHR (http://WKHR.org) I'll be rebroadcasting the Ellington concert from 1956. If you haven't heard the concert, you should treat yourself to this. Lots of great music. We'll get kicked off at 9pm (Eastern) which is GMT -5 (2 am GMT) Hope you can tune in

I don't own the Mosaic, but I have the proper set. The proper is great, but I'm not certain how much is dance music.

Interesting thread. In thinking about this, I have to say that the majority of what has been mentioned above is way beyond what proper or mosaic are going to do. For Benny Carter - how do want a complete set? Do you want every recording that Benny played, arranged or conducted on? His recording lega...

Re: mosaic sets

h.r.s. sessions (any comments? anyone have this? mostly danceable?) columbia small group swing (already praised in two other threads, but i'm kinda looking for a little older stuff right now) classic capitol jazz sessions ($192 *sigh* otherwise, this would be higher up) I'm a huge fan of Mosaic. No...

If your speaking of "hiss" in the recording, you need to be very carefull. Eliminiting the high frequency "hiss" is fairy easy in most sound processing software. But this is usually done by taking a range of frequencies and lower the dBs in the frequency range. But there are also...
