There are always a handful of exceptions. Even Miller and Kenton have a couple of songs I'll play. In the case of James though, the few numbers of his I'd play typically are played better by other bands. Now you're really interesting me. I never knew of other bands playing the charts that Harry Jam...

[Jerry, you would find the same opinion shared by MANY Lindy Hoppers, especially because Harry James' biggest hits were cheesy, Sweet ballads. Nonetheless, there are surprising exceptions in both hi-fi and lo-fi. Well also keep in mind the music was not designed for lindy dancing. If the criteria f...

Re: Just got the whole set for $70.

Are the Benny Goodman recordings considered part of the series? I know those were recorded by Benny Goodman and Orchestra. Also the original artists appear on a few of the tracks, for example, Nat King Cole is on one of the tracks. The Benny Goodman stuff is the exception. These are studio and live...

Re: Just got the whole set for $70.

My wife and I just purchased the whole Time Life Swing series which included the books and the albums for $70.00 on EBAY. The songs on the albums are not recordings of the performers that made the songs famous...... The books, however, are another story...... Dan your right. I'm hoping everyone rea...

I should have added that Harry James of any era is just plain cheesy... cheese on white bread with plenty of mayonnaise. WOW!!! That is a first. I've never heard Harry James called 'cheesy'. Differences in musical taste between us. Now to my definition, Mitch Miller is cheesy. Harry James??!!! Neve...

....It's just unfortunate that the performances captured on the very albums you mention are just plain "cheesy" compared to those captured in lo-fi. Well I can comment on the Harry James Nathan referenced. I would disagree that the performances are 'cheesy'. Harry James complete Capitol s...

50s bands for swing dancing

Being more from the radio side of DJ'g, I was wondering if you pro swing DJs have used any of the following artists for dances? These are primarily 50s bands that play a hard bop swing style: Terry Gibbs, Si Zentner, Les Brown band from 50s, Maynard Ferguson from 50s, Dave Pell, Billy May, Neal Heft...

The northern Ohio area is full of locals who play jazz. I have an annual 3 hour show (usually in the summer) that features nothing but locals. It is also EXTREMELY important to support them at clubs, bars, and other live events. That way the proprietor/organizer understand that the live music is imp...

Well to be honest, straight forward communication is usually best. If you can nicely remind him that you'll play his requests (when you can fit it in), and that having him near the DJ booth is difficult to keep the music flowing right. Maybe offer to join him for a dance at break when your done. I a...

Another one that popped into my head while shopping for lunch. Please don't ask why I'm thinking about this song while shopping because I have no idea: "Daddy" - The version I was thinking of is Julie London. Also appropriate for a wedding ceremony, especially the older generation will get...

Wow, that's a great resource! Thanks for putting in the time & effort. Thanks Ryan for the compliment. But I have to confess, I was mearly the spreadsheet guy. A good friend sent that to me a year ago in a text file. I converted the data to spreadsheet. Makes it much easier to hunt for a partic...

Another food related song:

Andrews Sisters with Billy May Orch - 'Don't Bring Lulu'.

This has a lot of food references. Not a swing chart. More of a novelty, fun song.

I always like playing this right after a version of Lulu's Back in Town. They fit very well together.

Wow that is always tough. Right now my brain is full of guitar music, so I'll start with some of those: George Van Eps playing "Tea for Two" - Amazing performance Barry Galbraith - The entire LP "Guitar and the Wind" - Great arranging by Billy Byers and Al Cohn Herb Ellis - 52nd ...

I can't believe I totally forgot this one. In the mid 1960s, Frank Sinatra on his Reprise label did a 4 LP series of musical theature tributes. Finian's Rainbow was one of the musicals he selected. The arrangements are great. As far as swing dance things, you could use: "If This Isn't Love"...
