2008 Portland Lindy Exchange - 11 bands!

http://PortlandLX.com - the Portland Lindy Exchange is back on March 7-9. We've had two full years to get ready and you best believe we've been busy! Simply put, this is the craziest exchange I've ever heard of. At the very top of the crazy list: ...we have eleven bands. ELEVEN!! We have ->11<- band...

I like it, but I'm in the "one song I'd dj at a swing dance" camp. But curious about anyone else's take on the rest of the album for swing? there's a lot I'll play for blues.

I think there is a massive distinction between people who collaborate to produce music changing the music, and people who buy the music changing the music. If a DJ wants to edit a song for commercial reasons (make it shorter, more danceable, slower), OK, but to pretend that it's for artistic reason...

I haven't personally done it, but now that you bring it up I may start looking at those macbooks again... the guys over at pennyarcade were ridiculousely pleased with the duel boot, so I may have to check it out.

I always tell requestors that I'll try to work their request into my set, but at a time of my choosing. If they ask why I tell them I want to maintain my flow, have songs cued, other requests, etc...rarely have anyone argue. I also tell them I'll try to play their requests, but no promises. If somet...

I have to wonder how much "research" goes into dj's at bars and clubs talking and it's reaction on the crowd. Personally it always annoys me. Generally speaking someone speaking over a PA is saying something important, so if someone starts talking I start listening. If that person is just ...

the BPM column/tag in JRMC is a calculated column that can be manual edited. If you chose to "analyse" your audio files with options for auto bpm etc IT WILL CHANGE THIS COLUMN/TAG.....I choose to use Custom1 or another custom field to store the BPM with the audio file. JRiver's BPM analy...

I have about 1500 songs + a ton of videos and photos and JRiver still runs fine and searches quickly on my 6 year old laptop.

A DJ can play more 'variety' but I think that also dilutes the focus. Not all DJ'ed songs, in this day and age, are songs I want to dance to. But when I go hear a band that I know is good, I want to dance every single song. That's my very definition of a good dance band: they make me want to dance ...

I don't know, it's really not that hard to hear breaks coming is it? Or just count the damn things out? I'm not entirely sure you need to memorize songs to hit all the breaks. Not that people don't get a little too into the micromusicallity sometimes (I know I've been guilty), but you don't have to ...

I kind of break things down into "dances" and "events." When I'm DJ'ing a regular weekly dance for an hour or two I charge whatever the organizers generally pay (and really don't sweat it, this the part that I'd almost do for free. Events on the other hand are larger, not regular...

I usually go for 15-20bpm "jumps." To avoid the "one song all night" feeling I rotate on "gut instinct" between male and female vocalist and instrumental, between big band, modern and "other" swing, and between "energy levels" So a six song set for m...
