My bad, I meant frequency range. I should know better. I'm do engineering in telecom, and for voice transmission, a big thing is squashing the voice to fit the available bandwidth by both filtering and compressing it.

Jeez, there's over 160 views of this thread, but only 12 or so votes. I'd sure like to see people vote more. I know some people are hesitant about posting, but voting in a poll is pain-free.

For lo-fi music, obviously it depends on the song. But I guess I usually boost the bass and treble effectively, although what I really do is drop the midrange and adjust the master volume up. When the horns come blasting in on certain songs, dropping the midrange a bit takes the edge off it. In gene...

Well, our scene here in San Diego is definitely smaller. The venues, both djed and live music, are all sparsely attended. I don't know what to attribute the decline to, I'm sure the reasons are complex. We have plenty of excellent teachers and venues. There are a number of different djs playing diff...

How is your swing scene compared to a year ago?

This isn't directly a swing DJ topic, perhaps, but the size of the swing scene in our cities obviously affects our DJing jobs. I posted a similar poll a while back, I thought it was worth revisiting again now.

Perhaps, but like or not, "groove" has become the designated Lindyhopper term for the larger group of more modern, slower, jazz and blues, not just a subgenre of soul-jazz.

I'm glad to hear lots of DJs saying they play all styles, and it is certainly true that the definitions are fuzzy and that many DJs range all over the spectrum with various dashes of jump blues, rock and roll and modern pop swing thrown in. But my experience is counter to the poll results show so fa...

i think its important to see which way the "groove" Djs vote and which way the "Classic" DJs vote Yeah, probably everyone seems themselves as diverse, and that the other group isn't diverse. So if the "groove" DJs outnumber "classic" DJs 2 to 1, say, the resu...

Regarding "classic" and "groove" style s

At the risk of starting another style war, Jeremy's post in another thread prompted this poll. We all know that most of us tend to fall into one of two main style: "classic" DJs who play more original-era and faster swing, and "groove" DJs who play more modern-era and slower jazz...

I haven't heard that version of "Soft", but I sure like the Swing Session version.

What sometimes works better instead is a song that goes into half time partway through, then kicks back into normal time. I guess I'm thinking of "Ain't Misbehaving" by Maxine Sullivan at the moment. I quite like that song.

Jeremy, I'm not sure exactly what your point was, anyway. While I may not play much before 1940, I regularly play songs recorded in the 40's, as my reviews and playlists show. This thread was talking about music available on 78's that hasn't made it to CD, and that could include such music, so I mig...

Face it, we get sick of songs quicker than non-DJs. I'm continually surprised when I ask good, regular dancers, "are you sick of this song, yet?" and they say "No!! I LOVE that song!"
