I've frequently wondered about what style to play at our outdoor venue, do I keep the tempos up because its an outdoor, festive event? Or keep it down because its concrete? I think I tend to push it. After all, its not as awkward for people to sit a song or two out because there's more to do and see...

When I'm djing Lindy by the Bay, I like the taste of a Mai Tai followed by a Pina Colada. Would that be contrasting or blending?

and here's everything you needed to know on media, from the CR-R FAQ. (forgot about that): http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-5 One quote: The manufacturers claim 75 years (cyanine dye, used in "green" discs), 100 years (phthalocyanine dye, used in "gold" discs), or even 200 yea...

Good question. I did a little surfing just now. Here's an interesting quote from a 2001 article from Information Week about the dyes, which are the main reason for failure over time: http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20010719S0003 Cyanine is the most widely used and cheapest CD-R dye. It looks...

Both. I try to contrast something each song, but not a cause a jarring contrast. The exception is an abrupt reset from a high tempo to a low tempo. In my opinion, it shouldn't take more than one transition song to get between two greatly contrasting songs in style (from piano jazz to Neo-swing, or f...

I prefer songs that are high-energy, middle BPM, familiar, 4-6 minutes long. Jesse said it all. I've actually made a compilation or two of birthday jam songs so I don't have to work hard at hunting for an appropriate song. I forget what they all are now.

Living Traditions in Seattle uses that "Triple step" terminology, they might have been students of that studio. They have "triple time" compilations: http://ltdance.com/cds.html Those people were probably asking for West Coast Swing music. I still think Shana's "Lawrence Wel...

I normally DJ without ear-phone. When I buy a new CD I listen to it several times picking out the best songs for dancing. I then keep my own notes on each of those songs. Outside of those selected songs it is unlikely I would be able to recognize the song if someone else plays it. A few CD's really...

Shana- What I thought was interesting about your exchange was that you said you only had 4 out-of-town djs, and limited the local djs to 4 or so, too. And you made sure each dj got two shifts, which I thought was a great idea. I sure appreciated it. I think Austin did the same thing--limited the num...

I've played "Savoy" and "Shorty's Got to Go" before, but I haven't listened to him recently, so this is a good reminder to check him out some more.
