When I was in New Orleans a couple months back I wandered into a place where I found the local Lindyhoppers (all 3 of em!), that came mostly to listen to this band whose name I forget. But it was awesome. An older black guy, playing drums. Kick ass jazz, amazing vocalists, funny stage patter. But wh...

I think they were doing a routine to the Sammy Davis Jr. version, does it have a lot of scatting? I don't know what album its off of, though, you'd have to check AMG.

I wouldn't say there is a dead spot, Yakov, but I would say that slow blues at about 85 BPM is about perfect, but blues dancing songs at 100 BPM can work well, too.

Maybe there should be a thread called "Stump Rayned" where we try to ask questions he doesn't know the answer to.

I've played a few Mose Allison songs, but don't find them to be songs I play alot. I know I've played "Your Mind is On Vacation" (110 BPM) and "I Love the Life I Live" (122 BPM). What prevents them from being great is that the tempo/feel is a bit sleepy and his songs have too man...

I play the soul-jazz song "The In Crowd" by Ramsey Lewis somewhat frequently and I think it feels pretty natural to Lindy to it, even though it doesn't have a swinging rhythm. One of my swing friends says its her favorite song to dance to. Something about the rhythm of that song makes me w...

For (attempted) funny polls, it would be nice if people could multi-vote.

Do you read every new post? (non-serious poll)

I'm finding it harder and harder to keep up. I'd like to keep my day-job, so I have changed from reading every new post every day to just reading posts from threads that interest me a couple times a week.

Jeez, I just normalize by ear. I play a few existing songs on my hard drive, play the new song, then amplify the new song using EZ CD creator by 70% or 130% or whatever seems right to match what the other songs sound like, and repeat however many times it takes to sound right. Its a pain, but that's...

It could be that as us DJs get more experienced and our musical collection and tastes broaden and grow, that we forget to play as much stuff that appeals to the newbies, and I believe any club owner wants to keep attracting the newbies. I'm not saying that's what Kevin did or does, but I think its a...

I don't preview. I do all my previewing in advance when I pick out which songs are good to play and annotate them (before) or put them onto compilations (now). I remember the songs pretty well. But I also respect those DJs that feel it helps them to preview.
