If a few people are ignorant enough to bash Willie, not much I can say for them. If you don't like Willie, you are missing out. There is a lot more to music appreciation than swing and jazz. Bash? Naw, I picked Willie as an example of "not harlem, playing music composed by somebody who is harl...

Yeah, I admit it, they're only equivalent in relevance if you don't actually listen to them. :)

Mike, are you really that narrow minded, or are you just being a prick for the sake of being a prick? The Willie Nelson thing was mine - cuz even though Gene Harris kicks ass, he has about as much of a connection to harlem as everyone's favorite long haired texan tax-avoider. I have a bunch of his ...

Willie Nelson recorded it too. (to further advocate for the devil)

...and that reminds me, somebody said to me not long ago: "well, just cuz something's slow doesn't mean it has to be groovy" with groovy being a perjorative term.. and I just thought to myself, "well, yeah, a lotta slow songs suck, that's true"

So something that ought to be addressed is the following question: was the "groove" trend started by DJs, or did the DJs just adjust to the changing tastes of dancers? Which came first, the "groove DJ" or the "groove dancer?" instructors are where a lot of music taste ...

Re: groove/vintage

Yeah, I also really like all kinds of music. I'm just starting to DJ in Seattle; we have several excellent DJ's local and in our extended scene (Kevin Tamura, Kevin Schaper, Travis Whetman, Tonya Surface) who have been focusing on the swing era of jazz. I only get to be that vintage focused (& ...

But I also don't want a complete divorce because even I see value in mingling and sharing. (In contrast, I don't see the same sort of value in mingling with "Swingers" except keeping in touch with friends who happen to be Swingers.) Plus, it is not impossible to cross-over; it just takes ...

Really, three dulls? Are you saying that because it's 8 in a row or because it's Al Cooper? And do you mean as a DJ or dancer? Just curious, because although I don't know that I'd ever spin 8 in a row of any particular artist (unless I was doing some kind of battle or theme or something), unless th...

As a patron, I bet you'd never know the difference. In fact I'd guarantee that almost no one would ever go up to a DJ Booth and say "Hey, what's with the 8 straight Al Cooper tunes?". haha, I sure as hell would. I like the savoy sultans, but 8 in a row would be dull dull dull. (but still ...

-edit: Is it really *that hard* to like both Chick Webb and Gene Harris? I like them both, but, to be honest, yes it is that hard, especially when it comes to danceability. It takes a bit broader appreciation of the wide variety of movement that the wide variety of music can inspire. Actually, I ag...

But, according to Frankie Manning, social dancing even in the "original" era emphasized mid- to slow tempos. What do you think that meant in terms of actual numbers? my sneaking suspiction is that at the time, anything up to 180 or 190 or even higher may well have felt like midtempo that ...
