I used to torture people with poultry music on thanksgiving.. then I found out that along with the pulling out of fingernails, it's against the geneva convetion.

Uhm, what? Lets get something clear here Basie's bass players from Eddie Jones to Buddy Catlet to John Clayton, and all the others in between played in the same style adn manner as the origionl bass player, Walter Page. A walking, boyant, unatrusive style. Hell the Basie rhythm section never really...

Re: Vinyl setups--playing, storing, etc.

http://www.idjnow.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=handytrax Hahahahaha, that has one of the most pointless flash vids I've seen in a while. But anyway, that's pretty rad, I'd be interested in knowing what speakers are in it, and how much of an angle it can be at and still play. -FF I'm sure the speakers ...

So considering only women have replied, it doesn't appear any one with a sword wants to compete with you  This is a total guess, but may trigger your memory - it sounds to me like the song might be "Everyday I have the Blues" --- there is a medley on the following Gene Harris song -...

Re: Vinyl setups--playing, storing, etc.

1) What should I look for when buying a turntable? Depends on what you're planning to do with it - I got by pretty good with a Dual from the 70's or 80's for a long time - but when I decided that I wanted to use records while DJing instead of just putting the stuff on CD, I had to pick up one that ...

haha, i was going to ask if that Strutters Ball was only on that ASV Hylton cd, but i see I have a copy on a Hawkins cd. It's funny how that kind of packaging can really screw with things.. because I have them on a disc called "Young Ella", when I used to write stuff down I'd often write ...

Yeah, even if it's not as educational and tribute oriented as it could have been, at least, from a traditionalist perspective, it looks like a phenomenal night of music. There's a few tracks in there that I *love* that I haven't anybody else play before (Metronone Allstars, the Hawkins/Hylton track ...

I'm actually curious what people see as the bad way to use bpm info. When I'm really inspired, the songs are just coming without thinking, but sometimes when I'm just not feelin it, I gotta dig, and at the worst, I definitely will use bpm as a crutch to sorta do it by the book until the inspiration ...

I've done that in my classes and it's also fun to see the look of surprise when someone does something they didn't think they could do. :) heehee, I once accidentally danced to the regular version of flying home when I'd meant to put on the slower one, and I was so excited that I could lindy that f...

I don't buy the "more information is bad" argument. I think the subjective version of that same information is a lot richer than just a number, but it's harder to write that down and it's a lot less consistant when you go back to something 2 years later. I rely on memory for the year stuff...

They've got a list of the music they use the most often... http://www.thislife.org/pages/scoring.html ...yeah, I spotted that, but it isn't one of the tracks they list. 4 or 5 years ago there was a track that I loved in the background, and after a couple weeks I realized it was "Settin and A R...

Off topic and all but did you see the documentary "Scratch"? They have a piece on dj shadow crate digging and it's crazy. The basement is unbelievable. Yeah.. was that at Downhome in SF? There's a place in portland (Crossroads Music) that took me 3 or 4 trips to make it thru all the diffe...

For music through a PA, especially a weak one, high dynamic range can be a bad thing - the quiet parts get lost in the noise and relfections and stuff in a way that they don't thru a good home stereo. This is a really good question, I can't really ever decide what to boost on old stuff either - I me...

..speaking of Ellington crossing boundaries, I heard a hiphop dj play something once with this odd little sort of honk kinda sound that played the melody to 5 O'Clock Whistle.
