Old Stuff for a Modernist Crowd

The local austin discussion about George viciously brutalizing the scene inspired this topic... for George, and anybody else who wants to play swing-era stuff in a mostly post-swing-era scene, what're are good baby-step kinda songs? Does it work better to work in blocks of stuff from the same era or...

I think from now on, for weddings, I'll just bring my own music, I'm pretty sick of Jump Jive and Wail and In The Mood and shit like that. Just hand the guy the cd and say "play ALL of this" :). ...and on the wedding dj discussion board: "Speaking of awful requests, I was working thi...

I've barely delved into the set yet, but I very much dig the Moten Swing with the ATC band.. track 19 on disc 4.. but I haven't played it to see how a crowd full of dancers actually reacts to it..

I see the washboard as evidence of how irrelevant the instrument is, and how important the musician..

George Reed played some bad ass "wooden-chair" in a musicality class at SONW.. but that doesn't mean I'm gonna seek out "drum sticks on a chair" recordings. :)

Speaking of Sidney Bechet, I only have one or two of his albums but would like to get into some more. Does anybody have any favorites of his that are a must have? The Ken Burns one is a decent place to start.. Fabulous Sidney Bechet is pretty good too. I've got one of those Europe1 discs, live in '...

I agree with Roy - run something better..

Do it on another night of the week - but remember, it's the health of your scene you gotta worry about, not the health of one venue that's run by a guy without taste.. (I'm assuming he runs it, otherwise, get everyone to bitch and moan to whoever does).

I think part of the art of taking or refusing requests is to hear past what the requester is saying and to divine what they actually MEAN. Of course in some cases that's impossible. But in the case of the 'not big band' request it pretty clearly meant 'something not so old and mono', at least I thi...

Ah ha! but what about the limited lifespan of a CDR?

man, can't nobody read the rules..

Blues in Orbit.

if I could make a mix, it would have a ton of stuff from Braggin in Brass, Blanton-Webster and Black, Brown & Beige, and plenty of later albums.. but the man said one, and that's my one.

DJing without headphones makes it really hard to cue up records. :) I don't think it's possible to know 300+ cds the way you can know 100, but I'm still surprised at how often I can remember the track number for a given song.. I actually noticed a decline in how well I knew my music when I started l...

Ellington - Unknown Session

Anybody else ran across this one: "Discovered in Columbia's vaults 19 years after it was performed, this recording features a septet from Duke Ellington's orchestra keeping busy in the studios mostly playing standards and blues. With altoist Johnny Hodges, baritonist Harry Carney, trombonist La...

Good call. We'll figure something out to make sure DJs can still watch the dance floor flow. So you wanna play next year Kevin? hee hee I dunno, I'd probably choke and player Fever five times in a row. I love the anonymity though - that you'd have to earn the applause even from your best friends.. ...
