Re: Silvio Blonde - maybe Australian?

Thanks, Trev. The closest recording I have to it is the 1932 Ellington Orchestra's Rose Room. I also have the same suspicion as you but whether that is the case or not, I'd like to think the track is recorded on some media somewhere in full, even if buried in the ABC studio vaults wherever they may ...

Silvio Blonde - maybe Australian?

I need a little help here and it may be most forthcoming from our Southern Hemisphere friends. The Australian TV series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries has a track as the credits roll on episode 8 of series 1 which is attributed to 'Silvio Blonde & his Invisible Orchestra', the tune is named In S...

Re: Harlem 2015 JB and Tatiana

Thanks Jesse I can't wait for the Bill Savory collection to come out ( if it ever does - In the US you have stretched copyright beyond reason ) Philippe I don't see this happening any time soon. I listened to it on Tuesday, well about half of it anyway. Some of it was already issued such as the Mar...

Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven

Trev (and whoever else) - you can read my review of it here: http://happyfeetjazz.com/ straycat - glad you're going to be spreading the love in the UK. Agree with everything you've written just about - the honest % of tracks on it I'd DJ is the highest I can remember in a release of its length.. I'm...

Re: Music within the culture shift.

Fair questions. I'll contribute if only because I feel like it's been ages since I posted anything on here. I don't remember having ever played anything he performed on anyway so it won't impact my DJing whatsoever. 'Jitterbug Stroll' has always made me cringe. As for the musicians who performed wit...

Re: One O'Clock Jump - Versions?

Harry James - Jan 1938 Brunswick
Count Basie - May 1959 (live) 'Breakfast, Dance and Barbecue' album
Benny Goodman - February 1938, 1937-38 Classics

I second the vote for the Metronome All-Stars 1941 version and Basie's July 1937 studio recording.

Re: Caravan discography info

Yeah.. the thing is I heard a version of Caravan on Saturday in a coffee shop here that was way slower than any I'd heard before. My very first thought after about the first few bars were 'ooh Creole Love Call-esque'. That bluesy. When I got home and searched my collection, no version that slow. The...

Re: Chick Webb documentary - anyone seen it yet?

This was shown in Seattle in June 2012 as part of some festival and in October 2013 in Portland as part of the Reel Music Festival. I didn't see it when it came to Portland as I was out of the country. Has anybody seen it and given a well written review (whether positive or negative)

Re: Question about music history and development

Are you sure it wasn't "taught the Henderson band how to swing" ?

For his part, Duke Ellington did talk about wishing he could have a Louis Armstrong in every seat in his band.

Re: Question about music history and development

Not sure if this helps or is what you mean, but the example I've used before is Fletcher Henderson's 1924 version of Shanghai Shuffle . Most of the song is a fairly straight dance tune, until around half way (1:56) when a young guy called Louis something comes in with a swinging solo: https://www.y...
