Bessie Smith

Bessie Smith's death was unbelievably tragic. She was in a car wreck while touring in the South, and was denied admittance to 3 different hospitals before the ambulance drivers could get into one that would take Blacks, some 3 hours after the wreck.

Killed by racists as surely as a lynching victim.

I believe the song you're looking for is Ella doing Mack the Knife on her birthday in Berlin. The albmu is "Ella Fitzgerald's Birthay Concert", At least it was 15 years ago..... The novelty aspect is great, because she forgets the word to the song, but doesn't stop singing.
