On the flip side, I think I come across as a cranky dj. When people come up to me and start conversations 15 seconds before a song ends, I will not give them my full attention. And they will invariably get annoyed, even if I say, "excuse me, I've got to cue the next song." So there's a qu...

Yes I find that too - I usually have a better sense of the mood and the conditions, and therefore have a better idea about what I can get away with. Conversely, if for some reason you miss part of the earlier set(s) altogether it can be more difficult to find the groove, and there's the added risk ...

Sorry to chime in so late but I absolutely LOVED Kevin... if you guys can score him again, please do so. I got the feeling that a good deal of the folks couldn't handle the ballads, but had no problems dancing to the Jazz or Blues numbers he performed. But I'm biased.. the man can do no wrong. :D Un...

Will you be a featured DJ, GatorGal? I'm looking forward to meeting you and hearing you spin. Really dug your Yehoodi set a while back. Thanks. I'm not sure about getting a slot. I'll be too worried about making sure other DJs get a slot. Also, the Yehoodi show was a joint effort with Kristina Arsc...

Yep, I've been in Austin since December. I guess I really haven't posted here in a while.

I think this is an awesome idea. There's an outside shot I can make it to Emerald City, but if I can't I'd love to submit a CD.

I'll be in touch! ;)

Perhaps its because I learned about the song through the story, but "Strange Fruit" is... not so subtle. Poetic, yes; subtle, no. "Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze," "hanging from the poplar trees," "the bulging eyes and twisted mouth," "the ...

Re: listening to the lyrics

a couple questions: do you think the dancers are listening to the lyrics of the stuff you play, or dancing to the emotional tone, and in general how important is that? I sincerely doubt that most dancers are listening to the lyrics of song. The reasons could be as simple as a bad sound system where...

I often succumb to the Late Lindy Hopper Syndrome myself, but I also still don't mind doing opening sets. It gives you the opportunity to set the tone for the night and perhaps try out the songs you're unsure of. Getting the energy level up for the newbies can only benefit the more advanced dancers ...

Interesting question. I would say somewhere between 5 and 10 hours a week. I know what you feel though about knowing your collection. I have a very small collection, but it never feels like I have a handle on it.
