Re: Legitimately Owned Music and DJing

Here's another question for the used CD buyers; It's probably safe to assume that a large proportion of CDs in a used music store were probably stolen and sold to the store. Do you feel any guilt when buying a used CD that it might have been a prized part of someone's music collection? Maybe I'm na...

Re: Legitimately Owned Music and DJing

Good questions all, Nate. I am very much against DJs who think they “own” songs, the biggest compliment you can give a DJ is to start playing a song you heard in their set. Ditto. If anyone compliments a song that I got from another DJ I let them know about it. This also applies to stuff that other ...

Check that... I don't think it's a concert. Here's a line from the book. RE: Oscar Peterson Persuaded by Norman Granz to join the annual JATP package in 1949, Peterson, on his NYC debut that year with his own trio, immediately impressed both audiences and fellow musicians alike. Mightily confused in...

Need help with an unfamiliar acronym...

I'm perusing a book my friend let borrow, The Encyclopedia of Jazz and Blues by Keith Shadwick. In it, he keeps using an acronym, JATP , in reference to a concert or series of concerts done by everyone who's important in jazz. I, of course, have no idea what he's talking about. Anyone familiar with ...

Actually, one of our DJs played a couple of songs that I found quite offensive. To my knowledge, I was the only one who was offended, so I didn't say anything. Besides, time will tell with any song you play; if people are offended, bothered or just don't like it, they'll either vote with their feet ...

I try to stay away from whatever the band plans to play (provided I know a setlist) but I don't necessarily stay away from standards and such. I've been known to play what I would normally play during one of my sets.

I'm also more apt to play new stuff during band breaks.
