One suggestion that comes to mind is to re-evaluate your perception of what a Swing DJ does. A good Swing DJ does not just play music he or she likes. We can do that at home or in the car. Good DJs instead are somewhat chameleon-like, and can adapt to what the audience likes. Now, granted, the idea...

A Linux laptop could be an alternative, even though I haven't tried it myself.
Or why not try a Mac? A second hand PowerBook G4 shouldn't be to expensive these days.

Can you recommend some good Mac based song editing software (not Audacity please)? Goldwave only works on Windows

Sometimes that really is a legitimate question.
A good dj is also a good dancer because he/she testdances the music before playing it.

To that particular song I was dancing a combination of balboa, lindy and a little bit of tango.

I spent the previous week at Herräng and upstairs in Folkets Hus, they played the standard stuff, which was good most of the time. No Robbie Williams unfortunately. Downstairs at Dansbanan they played, apart from the regular boogie woogie songs, some very exciting things like "Fever" with ...

Most pro DJs shy away from M-Audio soundcards. For instance, I had a Firewire Solo which got freaked out by frequent plugging / unplugging / sleeping / waking / rebooting, etc. -- all the things laptop users tend to do a lot. The only way I could get it to work reliably was to power down my MBP, pl...

This CD, For Dancers Only: A Lindy Hop Compilation , contains two interesting songs: 1. Bag's Groove - The Red Holloway Quintet 2. For Dancers Only - The Clark Terry Spacemen I thought that they where the originals so I bought the original CD:s where you find these songs: 1. Standing Room Only 2. Sq...

And the M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB?
I've tried it and I will probably buy one in the near future.
Its main drawback could be that you pay for a lot of features that most DJ:s won't need, but it certainly looks and feels rugged.

I cant in good conscience recommend anything along the lines of what you are looking for. It's all ersatz music. Why take the rest when you can get the best? What is "the best"? 1920s New Orleans Jazz or something slightly more modern? There is a lot of junk around too, even from the &quo...
