Kid Ory's Complete Verve might do the trick. Lots of long songs on there.

Watch out for blues structured songs and extra dogfights/interludes though. You'll have to count out the bars to make sure that the 32 bars match up with the phrase changes all the way through the song.

[Answered] Mean to Me, New Orleans Jazz Vipers

Anyone know of some dixieland versions of "Mean to Me"? Falty kept playing one last year that sounded like a modern recording w/a female vocalist. Forgot the artist though...

This is a great topic. I guess I tend to lead up to the end differently depending on the mood of the night. Sometimes it's high-energy, sometimes it's not. It's good to let things develop organically. For a very last song, I like to play something funny or out of the ordinary. Like a Tom Waits song ...

[Answered] T'aint What You Do, Billy Kyle

I feel like I should have this version for something other than the lunceford or ella versions for a shim sham. Anyone know this one?

i don't know if it's still possible (some sites are funny like that), but i used to just do a google search restricted to the emusic domain for a specific version of a song. best way to go about it, imo.

i think i should smack my forehead.

thanks.

unfortunately, that's on kid ory's complete verve sessions which runs at a cool $225 on the low end, or for a few bucks a ligamusic.com which seems a bit suspect to me.

more music in the vein of...?

Looking for more music in the vein of:

Firecracker Jazz Band
Preservation Hall Early Years stuff
Willie Smith

and anything with that pre-1930 N.O. feel to it...
I'm kind of at a loss as to where to go after Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, etc.

Thanks everyone!

of course the simple explanation is that the movie makers just looked at the date on the record and used it. maybe had it layin' around.

Re: Majestic Lunceford trivia-

Majestic Lunceford trivia- I saw part of some cable tv movie recently which was set in 1947. There was a scene in a record store (so the movie is already cool just on that basis) and as the people move around in the store, they pick up a Jimmie Lunceford 78 rpm...on the Majestic label.....which is ...

too bad we don't see this more often cause that video was pretty sweet!
