Re: The Big 18 - Celery Stalks at Midnight?
I guess the version of Easy Does It may have gotten some play during the recent Frankie 100 celebrations, since it's probably the first track that those of us who were lucky enough to be taught by Frankie would associate with him. He used it for his classes all the time.

Re: Question about music history and development
Yep, that Armstrong kid sure has a lot to answer for. No wonder he chose to lie low for the rest of his life.

If you have Spotify, I have a playlist you may want to check out: http://open.spotify.com/user/johan_f/playlist/5OTOrCfY2NZyfpTy6ykMoM Don't ever use Spotify to DJ, though. Especially not when it comes to current bands. Buy the music. Most of these people are trying very hard to make a living from it.

I reckon if you look at stars of the 1940s there must be a few still alive. I don't know if he counts as a 'major swing star', but I know Ray Anthony is alive ... Well, Ray Anthony was featured with the Glenn Miller band in the early 40s, so I'd say he counts. Not a superstar like Artie Shaw or Pat...

Anyone still alive?
On January 26, Swedish swing superstar Alice Babs - "the most unique artist I know" (Duke Ellington) - turned 89. That made me think: "I wonder if any major American swing star is still alive." Four days later Patty Andrews passed away. That answered my question and still left me...

I'm also a bit wary of dismissing genres or artists because of things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiiUUWBmPHM Wow! Never heard that one, any idea if it's available in digital form? That's totally genre-transcending: a swing classic played by a New Orleans traditionalist, with a guitar...

I'm still championing a big band revival. Me too. And I think it's on its way, at least in Europe. Lots of great big band being played at Lindy Shock in Budapest last week; I did a couple of well-received sets with nothing else. There was even a jam to Glenn Miller's In the Mood - a radio transcrip...

I was gonna say 'I think of this when I think of dixie:' and 'I think of this when I think of 'Nolastyle': ' and then I realised they're pretty much the same, except the Firehouse Five play it for laughs and Tuba Skinny are DEADLY SRS in that video. If I had to choose between those and this , I'd c...
