Actually, I've just found I can now download Amazon MP3s here in the UK - it might be worth checking with Amazon. Really? I tried and still got this: We are sorry... We could not process your order. The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous s...

I like to play "Guess the tune" with myself when on shuffle - see if I can recognize the tune without looking. If I were more competitive I might have started counting scores too, but I can't really be bothered.

Re: Anybody Shuffle?

Sometimes when I play swing songs on my iPod with random Shuffle, the iPod comes up with some great song sequences - fresh, fun, surprising. Which made me think about DJing this way. Ever tried this? I've had the exact same experience, but then I've also had the exact opposite experience. A better ...

There seem to be some glaring omissions there. I'm Beginning to See the Light? Minnie the Moocher? King Porter Stomp? Christopher Columbus? For Dancers Only? 720 In the Book? It Don't Mean a Thing? It does remind me, though, that I've been playing with the idea of doing a "Greatest Hits of the ...

I'm not surprised. Anyone noticed the striking similarity between the material available on Proper and Chronological Classics releases? I strongly suspect that Proper sets are really Chrono Classics collections with the lame ballads removed, loads of noise reduction added, new artwork and better lin...

I think you're thinking about Who Said Shorty Wasn't Coming Back?, which is sort of Shorty Part 2, also by Lucky Millinder. It's on the Chronological Classics 1947-1950.

The biggest little band in the land

I'm looking for some John Kirby Sextet. Any recommendations? This looks like a good selection, but I'm not crazy about the sound quality of the Definitive CDs I have.

golden gate quartet rules. And so does synchronicity. I DJ:d their "Stalin Wasn't Stallin'" tonight. Didn't go over too well, which I should have predicted - a capella seldom does, no matter how much rhythm it has - but it was fun to try. I've loved that song since I heard Robert Wyatt's ...

Oh yeah. Granted, that was like 15 years ago, when I first bought it on VHS. So the description I gave was what had stuck in my memory, besides the music and dance numbers. Have it on DVD now, but I must admit I've never sat through it again.

By the way, that ITM clip is from Sun Valley Serenade - dreadful movie .... It's not a "dreadful movie". It's extremely entertaining. :D If you like endless ski chases, sure. Or Sonja Henie. You don't get to hear Sun Valley Jump (one of the better Glenn Miller tunes IMO) in the mov...

Glenn and the boys get everyone 'In The Mood' in This Film Clip Quite impressive showmanship - you can tell that Miller was a huge fan of the Lunceford band . By the way, that ITM clip is from Sun Valley Serenade - dreadful movie but well worth having just for the Nicholas Brothers in Chattanooga C...

IBTSTL was all Ellington. The lyricist, Don George, brought it to James who recorded it before Ellington could (Ellington was with Victor, which hadn't yet come to terms with AFM.) IIRC, both Columbia (James' label) and Victor (Ellington's label) both signed agreements with the AFM in the middle of...

Where is this information sourcing from? Gunther Schuller's 'The Swing Era': p.24 "The twenty year old James wrote Peckin' originally for Pollack." p.25 "Another fine example of Harry James's exuberant arranging skills is Life Goes To A Party " I'd say that HJ tried his hand at ...

As well as being a star trumpeter and long-time bandleader, he wrote a lot of songs, including: I'm Beginning To See The Light One O'Clock Jump Peckin' Two O'Clock Jump I don't think HJ really wrote any of those songs. He might have put his name on them to get a piece of the royalties (a common pra...
