Re: *OPEN* Lindyfest 2015, Things Ain't What They Used to Be

I'd be surprised if Naomi Uyama couldn't help you (seems to be a huge Johnny Hodges fan), or Ryan Swift (seems to have lots of obscure recordings with that kind of driving groove). Please let us know here if you ever find out! (Also, sounds recorded in the 1950's or so, possibly in a concert setting?)

Re: Need help, can anyone identify version of this flying ho

That's a really deep, big honk and rich tone in the sax, and the sax leads the head (first time through) the song really strongly, and it's a smaller combo ... I'd say dig through later Illinois Jacquet recordings and see what you can find. His solo on the original hit with Lionel Hampton was his #1...

Nice find, and possibly the last swing band to record at the Times -- it closed the year that album came out. Thanks for sharing!

[Answered] One O'Clock Jump, Count Basie (Blue Room, 1944)

Probably too screechy at the end to ever play at a dance, but boy does it have a fun middle.

Appears on a lot of box sets, but does anyone recognize it and know what session / transcription it originally comes from?

Re: Traditional Jazz or Dixieland?

Lipi, are you on a Mac? If you're on Windows, get MediaMonkey. It's got a Microsoft Access back-end, search is fast and can comb whatever fields you tell it you want search to comb, you can do searches like "title:bail*y" and you can basically turn any single text field into "many&quo...

Re: Music within the culture shift.

See this thread on Eddie Reed . It convinced me 10+ years ago to stop playing him in public despite how great "Hollywood Jump" is. Steven Mitchell is my all-time favorite modern swing singer. I doubt I'll ever hear another - especially a male singer - whose delivery I find so flawless and ...

Re: CDs vs downloads

I never really quit CDs as the source behind the digital. Heh... never finished digitizing everything, either. I really need to put time into that.

(My digitizing involves also taking an image of the CD.)

There's some Rushing with Basle from later on a Mosaic (Roulette?) set of live stuff.

Who Should I See In Southern California?

Hey Southern Californians!
I'm going to be spending some time in LA over the next couple of years.

What individual jazz musicians / jazz bands are must-sees? Virtuosity over danceability is OK, because sometimes I'll be there with my husband who is more of a musician than a dancer.

Thanks,

Re: Songs from ULHS 2006

The band, by the way, is the " Bellagala Big Band ." Minneapolis has a big wedding-and-event-services company called Bellagala, and when people requested a big band, this is the lineup you get. What's always interested me is that this was their first lindy-specific gig to my knowledge (it ...

The opposite of "delete" is "re-acquire," so I do try to keep & comment/rank my duds so I don't repeat the past unless I mean to. :-)
