I definitely recommend it. Blues for Hoss' Flat alone is worth it...I love that song, and this is a killer, laid-back version with some nice breaks and wonderful sound quality. He does a faster version of Bill Elliot's Streamliner which is fun, and a beautiful, slow Soul Serenade. His other standard...

Again, for you to say that you or Greg have not Djed a single set that would sound remotely like something Jess would play is ludacris. Ah. I guess I can't argue that. Having heard completely different sets by Jesse at the Doghouse, late night at the Albany Exchange, at HJDF, etc, etc, not only wou...

Your post says a lot about your understand/appreciation of jazz, Mike. The fact that you thought one of my sets or one of Greg's sets was Jesse actually says a lot more about *you* than it does about any of our DJing. That's like me, the self-admitted novice around rap music, saying "all rap so...

its not his fault that there are tons of DJs who try to play exactly like him. Like who? What dances do you go to and what DJs have you been listening to? I don't think I've ever met a DJ who tried to play exactly like Jesse. (In fact, I don't think I've ever met a DJ who played exactly like Jesse ...

Great questions! According to AllMusic, he joined Ellington in 1928. I wasn't able to find any recordings before that with him on it, so I'm gonna guess not.

It also said he was with Duke's band until he died in 1970. That's 42 years he played for Duke!!!

there's that live at newport cd with Ella, Carmen, and Billie although i don't think they sing together. i think on the "i can't give you anything but love" the vocalist imitates other singers. The Vocalist who sings that is Ella. And the whole cd is great! (But sorry, Jerry, I don't thin...

Wow! I'm surprised at these responses (although, yes Reuben, I agree their older swing isn't that great) However they do have tons of stuff I'd get / have gotten both for dancing and (gasp) just jazz listening. Especially when it's so cheap. Just **some** stuff that they have: Lou Rawls Anthology Ra...

I Love BMG!

Any BMG members out there? They're doing a sale right now for $1.99 for most of their cds. After shipping, it's about $4.50 per cd, which is still a great deal, although you need to buy one at "regular club price" ($17.99 plus shipping). If you haven't fulfilled your requirement, though, t...

Oh what fond memories of the Boston Exchange a few years back; it was pouring during their outdoor dance on the Commons. I think it was Trager and/or Slick Mike (maybe others) who played nothing but rain/water related songs...Teardrops from my Eyes, Wade in the Water (when it was popular!), Blue Ski...

The quality of the DJing and the organization of the DJs was *BY FAR* better than any other ALHC. Past years had good DJs, but also some second rate DJs. And past years were always incredibly disorganized as to who DJed when and where. Major kudos go to Greg for taking this responsibility, and for I...

I think I may kinda have a reputation for being a Gene Harris nut. And while I undoubtedly admit he is by far my most favorite musician, I actually find that there are many other DJs who play more Gene songs in a typical set than I do (!) I normally play only one or two...and much more often zero th...

Jeremy! Wassssuuuupppppp? Indeed, kudos once again to Kevin for one of those very rare moments where seemingly none of the other DJs heard that song, *and* we all loved it and came running to the booth after it was over to find out what the hell it was. I don't know if I even thanked my partner! LOL!

Great thread!

I'm gonna throw another vote out for the Satch and Josh version.

Also, 'cuz I don't think it's been mentioned yet, a shout out to Nina Simone's beautiful, slow version from "Live at Town Hall"
