Re: Montreal swing bands of the 1940's.

Thanks for sharing this! I've been hosting a jazz show on community radio for a few years now. I prefer to mostly play swing and hot jazz but it's hard to meet my cancon quota with just the artists I already know and not play the same few bands or singers to death. This should help me track down som...

Re: "Secret" Tracks

I really don't see the logic of "secret" tracks. I have confidence in my DJ'ing ability. I have no need for secret tracks and will gladly share whatever information I have on any track I play. I think it's a childish, futile idea perhaps rooted in personal insecurity. Music is our tools. O...

Re: Software to DJ and listening music

I've been using Mixxx 1.11 for quite a while now both for dances and radio. Tried 2, found it buggy in a disruptive way, I see there's a new version in the pipeline so I'll revisit it once that reaches final release. The only feature I'd really like is to tell the auto DJ to pause after a certain tr...

Re: Backup of a music collection on the cloud

Google Drive and it's sync application would probably work. I use my own network storage for personal stuff but I use Google for financial records and other important records for our non-profit. It works fine.

Re: What is swing? - Suggestions of articles

New Orleans drummer, educator and author Stanton Moore talks about the concept of playing in "the cracks" briefly in his Groove Alchemy book. The idea is very relevant to understanding swing. I think he got the term from Johnny Vidacovich who talks about it in this podcast , he gets to the...

Re: Promoting new albums and fund-raising projects?

I'm a little late to this party. I'd be cool with a single "New and Upcoming Releases" or similar topic. I don't expect the volume of posts would be sufficient to need to split things off.

Re: The best of each instrument

To add a couple of drummers to the list - Jimmy Crawford - Lunceford's drummer, also with the Big 18. O'Neill Spencer - Played with John Kirby's group and Mill's Blue Rhythm Band. I really dig his brush work. You can hear it on most of Kirby's tracks, I'd recommend "Bounce of the Sugar Plum Fai...

Re: Wireless headset mics

I'm probably a little late here but we purchased some gear a couple years ago. We opted for Shure gear with the low end PG series belt pack transmitter and WH20 dynamic headset mic. The disadvantages are cables to the belt pack and the headset does not fit well on smaller heads. We opted for the neo...

Re: OT - I need a laptop. $300.00 pricer range

I'll second surreal on the idea of any last-generation laptop. Any hardware currently for sale by major vendors (Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, etc.) is way more than you or most people for that matter need. I'm a happy Dell customer. I've been satisfied with their quality. I've only had to deal with their ...

If only they had today's auto-tune technology. The Korn Koblers would be one of the biggest boy bands!

Re: Movie review - Swing Under the Swastika

I'll have to look for it. Have you heard any of the "Charlie & his Orchestra" German propaganda recordings? Some of altered lyrics are pretty nasty and the music was largely pretty straight but a few soloists could swing. Perhaps a few holdovers from 20's when jazz was popular and resp...

Re: Movie review - Swing Kids

Wow, that's crazy it's been that long. I never watched the film when it came out and didn't see it it was on late night TV a couple years after I started dancing. I remember it seemed pretty cool from the trailer and I liked the music but I didn't have a clue at the time that was even considered jaz...

I stumbled across it about a year or so ago. Thought it was a neat film. Not a must see film by any means but entertaining if you come across it and want something light to watch for a couple hours.

Re: How to be a better Swing DJ

Re-reading, I'm with SoundInMotionDJ. I don't remember those inaccuracies the first time. My automatic BS detector must have been tripped and stopped me from reading those sections. I really don't like the gain discussion. Having worked with live sound I find it very misleading. Level is what the DJ...

Re: What was your worst djing experience?

HepCat21, too bad you had to deal with a hothead. Better to stay calm tune him out if you can and get on with the job at hand. I'd maybe have asked him if he'd prefer I leave (and have no music at all) if he didn't simmer down. My current worst experience was my first time on broadcast radio. Got in...
